I wanted to purchase a nice laptop for my wife. She's not a gamer, but I might use it from time to time. I know this is way overkill but is it still a nice option for productivity? Best Buy also offers a 32GB version that costs $300 more. Is that worth it, or are there cheaper third party options?
Someone convince me to not make a stupid move. Isn't the 3070ti in somewhat slimmer laptops such as these better than a 3080 due to thermals? Also QHD, 240hz w/ OLED, and full SD card reader and thunderbolt? This seems like a pretty powerhouse type machine. With probably crap battery life of course, but i'm willing to sacrifice that as an "indoor" desktop at home.

Lay man's opinion - Old CPU, Old GPU - pretty soon, this will struggle to pick up newer games.

No offense but you don't know what you're talking about. The 3070 ti is on PAR with the 4070 laptops for most titles wattage for wattage. 12900H vs 13900H is only an 8% difference.

It's very much overkill, but yeah, would be a great option for productivity too. Generally speaking, if a machine can handle gaming, it's going to have no problem with Office or programming work.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! That's exactly what I was thinking. If it can handle games, it should more than easily handle everything else. My wife's old HP laptop is literally falling apart so spending extra for superior build quality is important to me, and this seems like a well built laptop.
If it's for your wife and not for dedicated gaming purposes you probably would be better served with something as powerful but without a dedicated graphics card. The dedicated graphics card eats your battery, increases weight, and increases heat.
I'd recommend either a ThinkPad T16, a Dell Latitude, or a Surface Laptop 5 15 inch variant.
Have one of these and a 4080 13900hx legion 7 pro. I end up using this more for the OLED and lighter chassis. The legion is a true desktop replacement, but for those that love the blade form factor and finish it's still a very good model. My #1 complaint is lack of gsync/vrr. I get high 100s in most games with settings at med/high and sometimes 90ish% render, gsync just would have been the killer touch on this gorgeous glossy panel.

Was same price on Razer website + 12% cash back (unnamed service $215) bringing it to $1585 the other day. Returnable until Jan 14.
Previous posts are right, 3070 Ti and 12th gen i9 are not ideal, but that's not what you're paying for here. There aren't any comparable Windows laptops at this price when it comes to form factor, size, upgradable components, and build quality (e.g., finish, aluminum chassis).
Sure you can get more powerful 13th gen i7 and 4070M laptop for less, but it'll be a brick made of cheap plastics.
