Was looking for a series 8 to replace an SE and Costco had the lowest price I could find. They also have the 45mm available for $299.99. Shipping is $4.99, but this still comes in well below other BF prices I saw. Was surprised that I didn't see this price on SD already.

I'm not really encouraging anyone to upgrade but this is objectively false.
I went from a ceramic series 5 to a 9 and
- everything is insantaneous, where as the 5 was laggy (and it annoyed me.)
- the bezels are smaller and it's more dramatic than i anticipated
- my battery life experience went from ~11 hours to well over 24h
- siri is more reliable (quicker on device transcription) although this benefit is kinda negated by the fact almost anything you instruct it to do entails the internet so it's a mixed bag
- it charges faster (that I don't care about)
- has the single-handed tap gestures ... which are admittedly useless

but yeah if you don't care about any of these things, then sure, they're totally the same
Regret missing that target deal that was cheaper
Series 8…literally no meaningful differences in the last ~4+ versions of this watch. I'm an "apple guy" and still wear a series 4 because there's been 0 reason to upgrade. Side by side or on your wrist, no one would be able to tell what model you're wearing

ikr a lot of people are talking about the se 2023 version thats on deal but with the series 8 you get so many more features and it is basically the series 9 without double tap and the Siri upgrades but that is not that significant. Also note that this one barely has any bezels whereas the Apple Watch SE does.
barely has any bezels
Is it a good thing?

Target never had the Series 8 watch in stock.

I'm with you. Never could get an S8, and I tried searching HI, CA, KS, and DE!

If you are only buying a model based on what people will think it is vs actual function, you are correct.

Thank you. It's gotten so old hearing from the "my Apple Watch 5 is the same thing as the "8 or 9"…

No, no it's not.

Does this watch need a screen protector against scratches? My wife had an apple watch 3 and it got scratches. I bought her one of those plastic protector covers that covered the whole screen and she ended up taking it off as it got scuffed and made seeing the screen hard and ended scratching the real screen.

I think it depends... personally, I have a series 4, and I don't use a screen protector, I have never really gone out of my way to try and protect the watch from anything, it has some light scratches on the surface after all these years. They don't bother me in the least, and I'm someone who is pretty nitpicky about screens in general. When I think of how I use the watch, it's just quick glances at things. What time is it, what's that notification, starting and stopping a workout, setting a timer. If I'm doing anything beyond that type of quick stuff where I'm looking at it for just a second or 2, I'd rather do it on my phone, so I don't think having a pristine screen is all that important on a watch. Some people tend to just destroy every gadget they are given, and for those people, I guess a screen protector makes sense, but if you're reasonably sensible with how you handle your belongings, and aren't one of those people that seems to shatter every device you get, and don't expect to be reading ebooks on your watch screen, you're probably fine without.

Yeah, Target has been playing with the 225 price twice already. Hopefully coming back for Cyber Monday.
And, there's virtually no availability when Target offers this watch at $225, right?

I'll jump in here - have had a series 4 since launch and it just has some light scuffs. Have never had a screen protector and I bang into things with my wrist a lot. The screen protectors I've seen have pretty much gone the way of @qblunt's wife's, but I think if you really need protection, get something like this [amazon.com] that has tempered glass and doesn't add too much bulk. That's what I did for my daughter's SE and it has held up alright (and cheap enough to replace).
