I have a 6a purchased a few months ago directly from Total by Verizon and it is a model GX7AS (ROW, not Verizon variant which is GB62Z). No guarantees all will be this model but maybe someone can use this info.
Once the phone is SIM unlocked, then the OEM unlocking becomes available.
I have had one of these from the Target deal last week. Seems to be a TracFone GSM model that works on Verizon 4G, with Android 13 preinstalled (have not seen it handshake to the Verizon network on 5G) But I had hoped to put alternative Android on the phone but I have been unable to get OEM unlocking / bootloader to turn on in Developer Settings menu. (Stays greyed out) If anyone had success would love to know how.

I assume these cannot be rooted, even after they're SIM unlocked?

Your assumption is big wrong. Pixel phone is easy to root to install third-party OS such as LineageOS.
"root" is diffident thing than "SIM unlock"

Straight talk vs total vs Verizon prepaid? Any advantage to any of them?

Verizon variants have been hit or miss from what I've read. These would be Verizon variants.

These are not Verizon variant. I bought one last week and it's the regular non-carrier model. Verizon version has mmWave and is a different model #.

EDIT: sorry for confusing people with the word 'unlocked'. I meant it's the same model as the unlocked version you buy direct from Google.

That may be true for factory unlocked bought from Google. But these are carrier branded phones and Tracfone is notorious for locking their bootloader.

What was the model # for the unlocked one you bought?

Did you buy the pixel 6a from Walmart? and if you insert any other carrier like T-Mobile or ATT SIM, does your device works?
What's the least plan we have to activate with this deal? (OP can you tell)

Please share more details.

Which service results in the lowest price to get the phone unlocked?

edit: apparently, judging from other straight talk threads, they can be activated on TracFone for $10. total price $110.
