Specs are similar to the Audioengine A5+ but Class D amp on the JBL's, vs Class AB on the A5+.
I'm replacing my recently purchased Kanto YU6 for these. I know they're comparable, but the Kanto cost a little more and were only available in bamboo for that price. Not a huge deal, but black is much preferred!
Also, I have an of set of A5s from 10-15 years ago and they're doing just fine - sound is very good. They don't have any wireless input (including remote) so they're no good for main TV. They've been used for basement gym area for the past five years and they work well there.
Edit: dang, just realized these don't have BT. That's a bummer…I don't use the Kanto with BT often, but it's a nice feature! All well, at this price it's still worth the swap.

When I bought the OG A5s there was a concern about excessive heat causing early failure, IIRC. Mine do get warm, but never hot, even after sustained use. It looks like these bad boys (A5+) have a better solution to that problem.
would these perform noticeably better that warrants over triple the price?
I emailed Audioengine support, explained the situation, and they offered to send me a replacement rear panel (which includes all of the electronics and amp) for $100. Not only that, but it was an upgrade because it was the rear panel of the newer A2+ with Bluetooth and USB inputs. Hell yes, excellent deal. I received the package, but they had forgotten to send a power supply. I emailed them, they apologized and immediately sent me a second package with the power supply at no extra charge.
10/10 experience. Their customer service was absolutely stellar, and rather than forcing me to trash these excellent speakers they sold me a replacement part for a very reasonable price. They now have a customer for life, I'm looking at Audioengine products first next time I want speakers.
