I ordered 4 for my NAS the last time WD had a sale. One drive was DOA. It took me hours to prove it to WD that it was dead (you need to be able to plug it into a desktop computer, not a laptop, and run their software), and then it took WD weeks to replace it (with zero communication). They replaced it, a brand new DOA drive RMA'd within 2 days of receipt, with a refurbished unit and just said it was their policy. Buyer beware.

Hasn't been a problem yet, but I too am concerned. Physics puts a hard limit on how long Helium drives can work.

That matters in a balloon because the balloon deflates. HDDs are rigid meaning it doesn't matter if it were to leak as long as the much bigger atoms can't get back in.

This is more true now than then when enterprise was the only one to have certian technologies that are now adopted on consumer drives.

Example helium filled drives used to be exclusivly on the enterprise offerings, but now is part of the better consumer drives.

Certain things like SLC for SSD's and such are still pretty eclusive to enterprise rated products.

But there are other nuances that the average user may not really care for such as SAS interface and IOPS, etc.

The end of the day they are rated for more endurance, have longer warranties, and often enteprise equipment gets pulled with really new stuff, that is why I would grab them in perfect situations, because you get a business liquidation sale and you can get those drives DIRT cheap.

Really wishing I could get a 10-12TB drives for say $12/TB. This BF/CM has been almost exclusively 16TB-20TB and it's depressing because I need 4 drives and just can't afford to drop $1000+ on my SOHO NAS. ( on capacity I don't need ).
I'm really hoping come late December we'll at least some drop on the lower capacity drives

But I'm just venting. Sorry for clogging up the thread.

I was waiting for the same thing to replace three 6-7 year old drives in my 6-7 year old NAS. They were having "sales" on 20tb drives, but I didn't need that much or want to spend that much... just needed something like 12-14tb. I thought it was going to be a dud of Black Fridayuntil BH's 16tb for $200 sale. I jumped on 3 of them not caring to wait any more. lol. At some point, I had to bite the bullet and realize I may not see a good sale on drives I was looking for. For the price, I probably wasn't going to see anything better, the seller had a good rep, and heck, they shipped something like the following day, I think. I should have them by Wednesday to expand my NAS. Glad I crossed that off the list. Big Grin
