If you see reddit forums on the ultimate bluetooth controller, 8bitdo sent a beta firmware to some people. That firmware allows the use of switch mode even with the dongle. Practically that means that you can use gyro controls on your PC, while connected to the dongle (rather than bluetooth). Also, some folks prefer to use the dongle for every controller mode since theoretically it provides lower latency.
To give some background - When in X-input the controller is detected as an xbox 360 controller and you don't get any gyro controls. The default firmware connects to the usb dongle as an x-input controller. And when you switch to bluetooth, it is detected as a Nintendo Switch controller. Using the beta firmware you can change the mode of the controller regardless of the connection method. Their computer software won't show that firmware even if you choose the beta channels; you'll have to download the firmware separately and install it via the software. But a bunch of people on reddit have posted that beta firmware online, so you should be able to find it with a quick search. I've been using that beta firmware for months, and haven't had any issue.
It's been perhaps 8 months since that beta firmware, but somehow they haven't made it official yet. Hopefully it'll come soon. But till then, this is an option.
However, the 8bitdo offers much more than the official controller. The Hall effect sticks are a major plus. It's also more versatile since you can use it on other platforms. You can tweak settings via the phone app. And it has back buttons. Finally it comes with its own dock.
Side note - I also have the gulikit king king pro 2 controller. That controller follows the Xbox controller shape and design almost exactly, so if controller ergonomics is of particular concern to you, that is another good option. It is even more versatile than the 8bitdo controller in terms of connectivity,, and has Hall effect sensors as well. It comes with swappable ABXY buttons so you can change it from Nintendo to Xbox/PC layout whenever you need to. However, it doesn't have back buttons and programming it is not as intuitive as the 8bitdo.
Side note 2 - the 8bitdo uses the gulikit Hall effect sticks, which are supposedly older gen sticks. Some 3rd party manufacturers have started to incorporate newer gen Hall effect sticks which are supposedly better in every metric. Personally, I wouldn't ever be able to tell the difference, but for anyone who cares about centering performance etc., it might be worth looking into.
I'd say a grade of A with over 3000 reviews is legit. Really good controller, super customizable, easy to swap between devices, and the 2.4 dongle in addition to Bluetooth is great. I'd ignore the D review that's only based on ~150 reviews. Maybe the seller isn't reputable, but with prime you can return it if you have any issues 🤷 and free returns through the end of January.
