IMHO ASUS is much better. The settings in the web interface are much more comprehensive and ASUS does not charge you a subscription for their internet security (they use Trend Micro). Also, the Netgear only has a 1Gig WAN port, where the ASUS has 2.5Gig. So if you at some point want to go beyond 1 Gig internet service, you'll need a new router. Also Asus has great parental controls, in case you have kids/teenagers. Asus also provides more frequently firmware updates to fix vulnerabilities, Netgear's product support left a lot to be desired.

I have had Linksys, TP-Link and Netgear in the past 20 years, upgraded earlier this year to an Asus RT-AX86U and love it, will never go back from Asus again. I would recommend the RT-AX86U or Pro (not the S), a bit more expensive, but you can get used ones on ebay for around the same price ($130). The enhanced firmware Merlin-WRT works on the 86U, but not on the 82U.

Also check out Dongknows.com, he does awesome in-depth tests about most routers.

Hope that helps!

I bought this router from Costco last year on black Friday. It's fast and has good range. Covers my previously dead spots at high speeds.

Had an AX4300 version of this model bought from Costco but wasn't really pleased with its performance: 1, Need to reboot monthly or sometimes even biweekly in order to keep it working; 2, no auto band channel selection built-in, sometimes when you new neighbor uses the same channel, then you are losing internet. Even the cheapest tplink a7 has auto channel selection in the web user interface and is proven to be more reliable than this. So I ended up selling the AX4300 and continued to use my a7.

I'm still rocking the R7000 from this slickdeal in 2014:

https://slickdeals.net/e/7438885-netgear-nighthawk-ac1900-walmart-89-97-b-m

That thing was/is solid, get wifi 200 ft outside my house

would a new one give me any noticeable performance improvement in any way?

Thanks for the detailed reply! I don't know much about routers, but my computer has been giving me a notification about my router's wifi being unsecure or outdated, so I thought it was time for a change
you're welcome! If your computer complains, then it is probably time (seems to be a known vulnerability that the manufacturer hasn't fixed). BTW, there is a great refurb deal on this router on newegg: https://slickdeals.net/f/17121121-asus-rt-ax82u-ax5400-dual-band-wi-fi-6-gaming-router-rfb-newegg-118-group-buy-100?src=jfy&prop=rcmid-43c178306782fec8e254d309e51e5f30

Are you sure you don't have the wrong security settings? I find it hard to believe that your computer would give a warning otherwise.

I've been thinking about getting a new router recently and I am in between this Netgear or the Asus from Newegg. Right now I have the Google Nest and half the 2.4ghz devices (smart bulbs) in my 750sq/ft apartment barely connect to them since the nest doesn't let me pick between 2.4 or 5ghz. Do you have a preference between these two routers? I play some online video games and watch netflix

Currently ,if you look around , and If not urgent to buy new router , you can find that eBay has sellers selling used tp link ax5400 (ax73) for $60-90 which will perform same or better than this Netgear, just my 2 cents based on what I ended up doing ..bought ax73 for 70$ , ofcourse it is used but these things don't go bad often

Don't listen to the other comments, your router could still be fully functional. The reason you get that message is because you are using a deprecated WiFi password standard. Look up WPA-3, you might be able to go into your router configuration page and change the settings to the latest standard.

Routers have a limited lifespan, as they work 24/7, especially these non-commercial devices.

Anyone know a good starter system to buy a router and then add to it later for better coverage. I have 2 floors + Basement Around 3800sq ft. I'm currently using my 10yr old Netgear R7000 Nighthawk and its only real struggle is the new security cameras I added being slow.

Same brother! Upgraded to gigabit internet recently and assumed my R7000's time had come but a few tweaks to ddwrt and I'm getting full 1GB. I'm leaving well enough alone, but and starting to feel weird about using such old gear.

For what it's worth.. I bought this router during COVID at Best buy for over $200.. coverage wise it's outstanding.. far better than any other router I've owned. But now that we've had it for over a year it's been dropping a lot of the 5g devices randomly. Others have reported this issue as well if you search reviews. I'm upgrading to a mesh system now but may try and reset the router to see if that fixes the issue I have. Lastly, the Merlin firmware doesn't support this router.. which is pretty disappointing as well if you're into that sort of thing

It actually does, but it's a different development fork, not the main merlin development: https://gnuton.github.io/asuswrt-merlin.ng/

That's awesome to know. I may try this out before I install the mesh router I just bought. If I could fix the drop issues I'd highly recommend this router
