I don't think Costco people would tenderize steaks mechanically (simply add more labor cost). They usually cut their steaks fresh in bulk from vacuum-sealed whole pieces (usually gone within 1-2 days) while retail stores keep their steaks out on ice for much longer. Therefore Costco steaks appear to be tender and wet. As steak dries and protein/fat starts to degrade, the beefy flavor becomes more pronounced, like aging. I feel you probably will like ribeye cap a lot.

Fact check: I was wrong. They do tenderize most single-cut steaks with blades.

From what I recall, they do mechanically tenderize most of their steaks, unlikely for this though. I believe you can see it on the label as "Blade Tenderized".

Actually, the richest people are most often the cheapest.

I always wondered about that.... something is off about their steaks compared to the same grade from other places. I've gotten to the point where I just don't buy them there anymore. They're not very good and I never knew - still don't know - why.
Glad to know I am not the only one who is "clueless". I also am very curious given the otherwise high quality of Costco products. Reminds me of this salad bar called "Sweet Tomatoes" - their veggies were also tasteless which I attributed to the near freezing temperatures they stored them at to preserve them the longest, after preservatives were banned. I suspect it killed the taste, but not sure. I wonder if the same is happening with the meats at Costco. This is just my speculation. If someone else knows better, would like to know.

Imo, the 11 pound strip for $799 is a better deal. It has less fat and has more of the meat texture.
The marbled fat is where the flavor is.

You will not be eating this like a normal prime rib. All that marbling translate to very rich and heavy bites that only a few of them will satisfy you.

My thoughts are that people who can afford this aren't likely to hang out on slickdeals.
Lol 11 dislikes from people who can't afford it 🤣

It's a bummer too... because their prices are amazing. I simply won't buy them anymore. I do like their tri-tip though...

On a side note, Aldi had vacuum pack whole choice tenderloin a few weeks ago, for $10.99/lb. My store only got 2, and I left 1 for someone else 😀 Absolutely delicious.. if you have a store near you, worth checking the weekly flyers.

i would def be careful when ordering this from costco. ordered one last year and it said 1 day express shipping (obviously since its a frozen item). it was delayed 5 days and came completely defrosted, hot and smelled like what you think meat would smell like if left outside for 5 days. i had a battle with costco support to get a refund. prob 3-4 calls with different reps. they all told me to hold onto the meat so someone could come pick it up to return (wtf?)

I don't think you fully understand the demographics of those who hang out on slickdeals. I have been on this site for over 16 years. My net worth and household income has changed significantly over that time, for the btter... perhaps partially BECAUSE I hang out on slickdeals! While I won't bite (pun intended) on this deal, that doesn't mean I couldn't.

I am quite sure I am not the only one.
You're far from the only one. Being well-off and thrifty aren't mutually exclusive at all. There's likely more than most think here. Too bad nearly all the posts for a high quality item at a great price end up being crapped all over by the cheap SD'ers. Like a deal post for a nice watch and it inevitably ends up with all kinds of idiots trying their comedy act or saying stuff like anyone that spends money on a luxury watch is a moron, a Casio is just as good as telling time, etc.

edit: spelling.

I just got back from Japan a few weeks ago and the A5 was life changing. Anyone with experience with this specific steak from Costco can tell me if it's comparable? I'd hate it if the only way to experience A5 Wagyu was a 16 hour+ flight to Japan.
