I don't think Costco people would tenderize steaks mechanically (simply add more labor cost). They usually cut their steaks fresh in bulk from vacuum-sealed whole pieces (usually gone within 1-2 days) while retail stores keep their steaks out on ice for much longer. Therefore Costco steaks appear to be tender and wet. As steak dries and protein/fat starts to degrade, the beefy flavor becomes more pronounced, like aging. I feel you probably will like ribeye cap a lot.

Fact check: I was wrong. They do tenderize most single-cut steaks with blades.

From what I recall, they do mechanically tenderize most of their steaks, unlikely for this though. I believe you can see it on the label as "Blade Tenderized".

My local costco occasionally has american Wagyu on sale, 2 pieces of ribeye for around $60. tried it and it was very good. I usually dont buy steaks at costco because they are tasteless, even their prime and lower grades have been mechanically tenderized, which is less sanitary. I find steaks at Sams and safeway better tasting than costco's steaks.
If you don't like Costco because they are mechanically tenderize, you should buy a primal and cut it down yourself. Same prime quality and low cost, but not tenderized.

I know it's not exactly the same, but if I'm gonna spend premium on meat, I want to order some variety. Just put a spring order in for my 1/8 of a TX grass fed cow. Couple hundred less than this

I always feel the pain if somebody cooked this steak to well done.

Funny enough, a lot of chefs recommend you do cook your A5 wagyu to at minimum medium if not well. When it's rare, the meat is a bit stiffer due to high fat content.

This is exactly why I buy the whole slab from Costco and cut it up myself, vac seal, and freeze. Slightly lower cost and not contaminated by their blade tenderizer machine

if you're gonna spend 70$ LB on steak, get the real deal. American A5 is still great , but for about 90$ LB you can get real Miyazaki Wagyu from Japan. I've gotten from the rarecutmeats website and was really impressed

False. I love SD but I bought 6lbs of A5 Wagyu for $500 'cause I thought I would absolutely love it. I was wrong. I didn't like it. It wasn't bad but it was too fatty and expensive for my taste. Would I have bought it again if I loved it? Hell yeah. My friends and family whom I shared with were mixed as well. Some liked it and some don't, so definitely a matter of taste.
Japanese Wagyu depends highly on how it's prepared to be enjoyable. If you cook it the way you do a steak, then it's not going to be that special to be frank. I consider myself to be pretty good at making good steak and it took me 5 tries to nail down the best way to prepare wagyu, though I thankfully had a good reference when I had Matsusaka beef in Japan.

The best way wagyu can be enjoyed personally is yakiniku style, thinly slice the beef, cook it over personal grill on high flame (600-700F) almost less than 1 second each side. Enjoy with salt and pepper mix.

Second favorite would be rhombus cut the beef, cook like a steak but black and blue, brush on soy and eat like a nigiri.

Third would be shabu shabu, thinly slice, then blanch in shabu shabu broth for less than 5 second. Eat with raw egg yolk and soy.

Fourth would be just to eat it raw. Seriously. Defrost and wait until room temperature. Slice like sashimi. Eat with thinly sliced red onions, soy and wasabi.

Fifth and last would be to prepped like a stead.

The best steak I ever had was at a Japanese steakhouse near Toyoto City, Japan.

I've been there many times. They have a cheaper option which is sometimes recommended over the more expensive steak, depending on factors I don't really understand. This shows me how honest they are though. I go with their recommendation and always get amazing, delicious, mouth-watering steak. I overdid it last time though, and ate so much that I did not want any steak for quite some time afterwards. Too much of a good thing is real! laugh out loud

On average it's only $70 to $100 per person for amazing steak. The same steak in Tokyo could cost hundreds of dollars, but due to the somewhat remote location near Toyota City, it was a bargain. Their steak is much better than Peter Luger at its finest in NYC, known to be one of the best steak houses in the USA, which is still very good steak but has declined a little in recent years.
Care to share the name of the tokyo steakhouse? I love peter luger too lol. Thanks
