Straight talk should be banned from SD.
If you do this deal, make sure to use a card with an easy charge back policy.

Phone is 18 months old and newer iterations aren't groundbreaking. It's pretty solid for 100.
Honestly this might be the single best deal in cell phones right now. You could easily use a new one of these until the Pixel 10 comes out, if not further.

Got three Pixel 6a in my family for almost an year now. No such issues and camera is impressive.
Off the top of my head the only phones I had that I remember ever having any quality issues with, was the LG Chocolate Touch, ZTE Axon Pro, and a number of windows phones. But those were all budget phones.

I've used a LOT of phones of the past 15 years. Probably at least 40-50 phones in that time. However, I had no issues whatsoever with the Nexus 5, Pixel 2 XL, and Pixel 4a 5g. They were all solid.

When try to activate the phone, the cheapest plan is available is the $35/month one. How do I activate the $15 or $10 plan?

Use Tracfone chat and have the rep "rebrand" the phone then activate on TF:

I did via chat on their website. I didn't mention anything about rebrand and neither did they.
I said I got this phone from Walmart and online activation is not working for me.
They took my name and IMEI and confirmed the phone is legit bought and then proceeded to setup my account with my email and the plan PIN I got from ebay.
did you get a sim card from ebay, too?

Ok to everyone that wants to unlock the device, I just did it and the process is kinda simple:
1- Buy Straight Talk device
2- Make sure the SIM card that came with phone is inserted.
3- Buy $10, 30-day plan from TracFone eBay store
4- You will receive a 15 digit pin for the 30 day plan on your email associated to ebay account.
5- Go to TracFone website, go to "Contact Us" tab, select Chat, ask to chat with a live agent
6- Tell the agent you want to activate a new phone (you don't even have to mention that you want to rebrand from Straight Talk to Tracfone)
7- Agent will ask you for the device IMEI, email address (idk why but just provide a email)
8- Agent will ask you if you already have an airtime plan or if you want to buy one, we already have the 15 digit PIN that we bought from eBay, so provide that PIN to the agent
9- Power off and turn on the phone, your phone should be activated by now, make a few test calls and/or texts
10- Text UNLOCK to 611611
11- You should receive a text saying "Congrats, your device will be eligible to unlock" in 60 days.

and just like that your device should be elegible to be unlocked in 60 days, the unlock is not automatic on android devices, only Apple devices will automatically unlock, you will have to contact TracFone costumer service in 60 days and they will help you unlock it.

Thanks for the detailed steps. Since you're only under their plan for 30 days, will there be any issue with unlocking it in 60 days when you're no longer under their service?

Nope, you don't need active service for 60 days, as long as you activate the new line for 30 days you should be good, just make sure to text "UNLOCK" to 611611 and don't remove the SIM from the phone.

Based on your post, I've just ordered the phone from ST.
Wondering, since I already have an active, not-so-exciting unlocked device on Tracfone, if I could change the chat conversation a bit and just ask them to switch my service and number "to this new better phone I just got" and have them activate the 6a with the same ease you describe above. ???

Thanks for your help. Wish me luck.

Sorry if this is a Capt obvious question but will this work for me on PureTalk (ATT MVNO I believe)... And can it be done more than once if I want to get these for my wife and in-laws?

Bought from Walmart online yesterday and picked up today. Also bought the TracFone 10$ 30min plan from TracFone ebay store.
Failed activation today after pickup and TracFone CS said take it back to Walmart and ask them to tie the purchase to the receipt. They didn't scan it correctly and hence it's not showing in their system.
So I went back to the store and the guy at CS desk had no idea. But the guy at electronic desk knew the problem. But he said he cannot fix it and CS needs to fix it.
Tried to return the phone and the CS said they don't accept phone reruns at that particular store because they had one explode and I can go to some other Walmart.
I then called the store next closest to me and the lady at the electronic desk knew exactly the problem and solution. I went to that store and she was able to do the return without receipt and rebuy and scan the codes correctly.
Then I tried online activation on TracFone website and thst still didn't work.
So I chatted with TracFone CS and they were able to confirm the phone is now good and then help me activate the plan I bought online.
The online plan gives you a PIN that I gave to CS.
They didn't mention anything about rebrand and neither did I.
seems the deal really not worth the time
