ETA: I also get a full 12 months out of each filter. My manometer tells me there's barely any more restriction after all that time. 4" filters get me better filtering *and* reduces total filter cost. Win-win. It should be the standard IMO.

The filter fits in fine, but because it's not as flexible, it's hard to pull out for replacing.
I had to break some pieces to get it out. I probably won't use it again.

How common is 4 inch
Old house only had room for 1 inch furnace filters in the ceilings, but we also had (3) of them in totality. It was a dang pain having to buy 3 filters 4 times a year as they were constantly dirty and changing them consistently. There was also a filter in the attic. I consider it to be a HVAC dream (or nightmare).
Basically, all HVACs ain't the same, so it just truly depends...
