Glad that they are expecting additional stock at the $79 price. Wish delivery was earlier than January.
Ridiculously lengthy wait!

Can someone please explain why this particular drive is considered good? Am I on the right track in that:
  • Crucial Brand - this is a reputable maker of SSDs and consumers should trust that their SSDs are of high quality and should live past their 5-year limited warranty.
  • Read/Write speed of 560/510 MB/s - I assume this is basically the upper limit of SATA SSDs? And if we want anything higher (like >5000MB/s), we'd need to go M.2?
  • Price - $40 per TB is considered a good value for fast SSDs?

Anything else that stands out about this SSD?
Thanks in advance!

What is the difference between this and an M.2? Besides gaming, would I ever notice a difference? Even in gaming, could I notice a difference between this and M2?

I saw the TeamGroups go for 60 bucks. I want to get a deal and pay 50 or less for a 2TB SSD to put in my new gaming rig…
This has some dram so is preferable.

Slightly slower loading times and copying times as limited by sata. Most game engines seem able to compensate, massive texture streaming not quite there yet. M.2 helps on stuff like virtual machines and such,

This will consume more power than a Samsung EVO 870, but should otherwise operate pretty much the same. In a laptop, the extra heat generation might be an important downside, but in a desktop, who cares?

Note that there was a period of time when EVO 870's were prematurely failing. Maybe it was a bad manufacturing run or maybe bad firmware, I don't know. I bought one anyway not long ago and so far my EVO 870 has been perfectly fine. AFAIK, Crucial MX500's have never had any such reliability problems, so there is that. Just don't buy any on AliExpress -- can't be trusted to be genuine, some people got a fake/QLC drive that route.

This is probably the exact SSD I should buy for my OptiPlex's unoccupied 2.5" SATA slot. It's just a matter of if I want to play a game of cheapa$$ chicken and see if it does down to $50-60.
You don't necessarily need a slot for a 2.5 ssd. If you can get it in the case and wires to it there's really no advantage to even screwing it in. I had to remove my drive cage 3 years ago to fit my video card. No issues at all.

It works great for my desktop but I need a rack to mount it anyway.

The 2TB mx500 has a 700TB TBW endurance rating and 1.8 million-hour MTBF rating.

In other words, it's rated to fill up approximately 350 times before failure and can run for approximately 1.8 million hours before failure.

For comparison, a Samsung 2TB QVO is rated for 720 TBW.

Based on my own Eufy 2k camera usage, I'd say one camera will fill up 2TB every 16 weeks or so.

Quick math: if you have 4 cameras on your homebase 3, this drive should last about 30 years.
