Interesting and good find on the Amazon version. Used to use Asus routers before moving to mesh but sucks can't use openWRT on mesh. These able to be hacked?
What differentiates this from my google mesh from about four years ago?
Google has 3 different Wifi mesh devices out there. The latest (the "Pro") has only been out for 1y or so, and it's the only 1 with WiFi 6. The previous systems, including yours, are WiFi 5.
The latest version includes the 6GHz frequencies which provide faster speed and less crowded airspace, which means that you get more speed, less latency, and more devices connected to the system.
I've personally just upgraded from the old Google mesh system to the new one (this week) and there is a noticeable difference, particularly when streaming multiple netflix/plex devices. But there's a lot of people in my house, with ~100 devices connected. YMMV depending on how much you stress your Wifi.
$120 on WalMart NETGEAR Nighthawk Dual-Band WiFi 6 AX1500 Mesh System 1.5 Gbps Router + 2 Satellites (MK6W-100NAS) https://www.walmart.com/ip/164329959
I bought these yesterday just to fiddle with. Absolute, and I mean absolute barebones.
Security option you need a paid subscription, parental controls you will need a paid subscription.
The only thing you can change is manually renaming connected devices, and the wifi name.
You can do an internal speed test, wifi signal strength testing around the house.
This setup is designed for someone who wants to plug it in and walk away. Fantastic price if that's what you need.
On my fiber, I am pulling about 121 - 268 on speed tests depending on where I am in the house of 5400 Sq ft.
