I understand. What I'm saying is that 30 minutes in the sun gives you way more than 5000 IUs.

Depends where you live. I'm by Lake Erie. Here, winter sunlight does not have enough of the UVB component that is essential for vitamin D synthesis. For all practical purposes, one cannot make enough vitamin D in cold climates in winter. I don't supplement any vitamin d in summer, but take 2500-5000 the rest of the year.
