I wouldn't say any brand in particular. Just buy a reputable brand. Some are Mountain Hardwear, North Face, LL Bean, Cotopaxi, Marmot, Eddie Bauer, REI, Mountain Equipment. There's probably many others I'm not thinking of. I would just avoid the budget brands like 32 Degrees unless you want a fall jacket as they are just not filled much, but they are still good. Eddie Bauer, LL Bean, and Lands End all make some good stuff and some lower end stuff made for Walmart and warehouse stores, so you have to pay attention more with them. To get the best deal, you have to cast a wide net. If you are set on a specific brand or if you want a hood, you might need to be ready to spend $30-40 more.

A lot of outdoor channels on YouTube have been advocating for the Decathlon MT-100 as a budget jacket. However, the skeptic in me thinks when a lot of reviews are popping up all of the sudden that it might be because they are actually paid spots.

Columbia is a good brand, but I would be careful selecting their down jackets unless you understand their philosophy. Ever since Columbia made the Omniheat coating (small plastic foil dots added to the inside of clothing that is said to offer 20% more heat retention) they have often filled down jackets less to achieve the similar performance. If that's okay with someone, cool do it. Personally, if I'm buying a down jacket, I want the down to do the heat retention, and I don't want plastic foil blocking any of the breathability of the Pertex or whatever the lining is made of. If a person understands what they are shopping for, then some of Columbia's stuff is very high value. I am fairly square built, so Columbia fits me well for most items as most run a little big and aren't very tailored. Skinny people may prefer other brands or at least Columbia's more tailored stuff.

It's a light to midweight synthetic, so it won't be very warm on its own. Good for a brisk day, but not for cold. Comparable to a lightweight fleece, but with better wind resistance.

You can routinely get sales on 650 down fill jackets for about $60 and 850 fill for about $100 if you want a jacket for cold weather, but down ideally shouldn't be rained on while synthetic tolerates it.

Bought a Gerry jacket similar to this one but with 90% down a few years back for about the same price. Not sure how warm this poly fill would be.

Thanks - I own one of these (not from Costco though) - have had it for about 4 years - no issues - for me light to middle weight in warmth and very light. I still like it - good jacket!

Any brands in particular to keep an eye out?

Columbia is a reputable brand that's likely more readily available without buying from a specialty store.

I agree with your last paragraph especially. When you open a review on YouTube and the sidebar thumbs are literally all recent reviews of that same product, you can assume these are all paid promotions and at most mildly critical.
