If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

Got r7 few years back! Cop caught me speeding but radar didn't detect anything! I was keeping software up to date!
That can be due to a few different things

- The cop was using laser. Radar detectors are not really equipped to pick up laser and if they did it is too late anyway. For laser you can either invest the money on a laser jammer if legal in your area or run waze since laser is always stationary.

- cop was using a band you have turned off.

- cop was using an out of tune gun. Or a gun with a frequency you have filtered out

- cop paced you. Basically drove behind you and matched your speed

- cop is lying, estimated your speed by eye and went for it.

Your ticket is you still have it should have some information on how he got you. Buying the radar detector is the easy part but learning how it works, how to set it up correctly, and what are its shortcomings is the more involved one.

edit: just wanted to add that your unit may have been defective (you should notice that it is weirdly quite all the time though) or just f-ed up and froze that one time just like any other piece of technology.

If I'm looking for a 'buy once, cry one' detector, is this it? Never owned one before but have always wanted one. I'm tired of having to go the trial by declaration route here in CA even though I've been successful in getting every single one of my 8 speeding tickets over the last 10 years here dismissed.

How effective is this unit against LIDAR?

And are these useless against laser?
how did you get them dismissed?

Is this an authorized source? Thinking it may be safer to pay the extra $50 on Amazon?

Detectors are ticket notifiers when it comes to laser. When they hit you, if your unit even goes off, they have your speed. There's very little beam scatter and the light pulse is very narrow. They aim for your light or front plate. Hint don't put on a front plate that looks cool if you don't need one in your state.

The R8 will support the uniden laser jammer when they finally release it.

I can tell I'm getting old because I've changed from being irritated at slow drivers to being irritated at tailgaters. I just came to realize I have no interest in adjusting my speed in order to please another driver, let alone my risk level, or the wear and tear on my car. Leave earlier.
As long as people move over and stay in the far right lanes then they should be free to go the speed limit. But left lane clingers who seem to never look behind them, or do just to make some silly point while blocking others is just a dick thing to do.

You can drive the speed limit or even a couple of miles below the speed limit in the right lane no one should tailgate you there. The left lane is for passing. No one asked you to adjust your speed or accept additional risk but the world is also not going to adjust to your aging.

If you are in the left lane impeding traffic in my state you can get pulled over. I've seen it happen twice personally. There's a great Ludacris song that explains how driving on the highway works.

That's fine. Just stay in the right lane. No one is asking you to drive fast.
