People want to get alerts when the temperature is not within a range where it supposed to be, to avoid throwing the food away. Can happen due to number of reasons - partially closed door, accidentally unplugged power cord, flipped breaker, broken compressor etc.

I personally use Acurite. My Home Assistant has SDR USB stick that listens 433MHz channel and decodes messages sent by Acurite sensors. Automation will text me when the temp is outside of the defined range.

I'm using something similar; I think I get 2-3 years out of the AA batteries in both the fridge and freezer, as long as they are alkaline.

This device has saved me a few times when my fridge or freezer door, for some reason, didn't fully close, and temperatures started to climb.

Also, knowing the temperature of my fridge/freezer during a power outage gives me a good idea of when I might need to pull out the generator if the fridge/freezer starts to get too warm without opening the door to check.

As Vladstar noted, there are many reasons a refrigerator or freezer can fail. Two years back the fan motor on my main refrigerator/freezer failed. As we use it daily, we noticed the temperature was not cool enough. I obtained a new fan motor and did not lose anything in the unit. A few months later our secondary upright freezer in our basement failed. We lost a couple thousand dollars worth of meat. I purchased one of these thermometers online, placed one sensor in my basement freezer and the second in my main freezer. Now every time I walk by I can see both freezers are working correctly. It has particularly been helpful in power outages. This feels like insurance to me.

I use one for my deep freezer and my fridge. Saved me a few times when the doors didn't close properly.

Have been using switchbot sensors for this but people may prefer to have a permanent display.

Does the USB stick you use get really hot? I had a similar setup, but I was a little concerned with how hot it was getting.

Have a freezer fail once and you will wish you spent the money on one of these things.
