I'm on my second pair of these. They are very durable and comfortable. The newest version runs a little narrower in the toe box than they used to be. They are also heavy, so if you want lightweight hikers then may want something else. I use them mainly for fall/winter use. Waterproofing is excellent. You won't find a better boot in this category for anything close to $99.

I don't think it's doing anyone any favors to announce that there are "Tons of good reviews on Reddit too" when there are at least as many complaints on Reddit. When you see boots like this on discount, people should assume that they are not selling at MSRP for one or more good reasons. It's also important to note that good brands can produce bad products. Moving production of some/all SKUs to other countries to save on costs is a frequent cause of a drop in quality. That's my guess with these boots. As of 3 years ago they were made in Vietnam.

Wife picked these up for me for the holidays, also because we go hiking with our dog. Super durable and actually quite comfortable. Pretty true to size. I always pick up 2 to have 1 as a backup pair. Its hard to find good deals now a days....

Heavier boots are absolutely good for hiking if you hike with a pack. Even a fairly light daypack, which most people would not consider backpacking or mountaineering.

Well, there's heavy weight and heavy duty. I think the criticisms of these relate to the former. That said, 3 lbs doesn't seem that heavy for a large pair of boots, if that's what they are.

There are a few reviews on Amazon saying these boots come apart at the seams after a short amount of use. I have a different model of Vasuqes (Talus XT) and the sole is already starting to have some noticeable wear away after just over 80 miles.

Why are heavy boots good? Please explain the value of the weight or why light bolts aren't good, or why heavy vs. light depends on what you are doing? I've done a lot of hiking but figure there is always something to learn. Thanks.

I have Vasque boots (Taku) that have been though a ton of hiking/traveling over the last 9 years. They're still going strong. I did replace the insole a few years ago and feel like new. I can also attest that they run narrow, which fits my feet perfectly. If you have feet on the more narrow side, Vasque is the hiking boot for you.

In case you don't know the brand: Vasque = Red Wing Shoes.

It's more of a Athletic Shoe line that they sell outside of their stores (Ditto with Irish Setter, although they're more boots). You can get these at Red Wing Stores, but REI and Cabelas, etc sell them also (but dont sell Red Wing branded shoes). They're are also not made in USA (then again only Red Wing Heritage is anymore...)
