The general consensus I've seen on these headphones is that the tuning is awful, so out of the box they sound rather bad. The air motion transformer drivers do have extremely low distortion, so they should take rather well to eq. That being said, if sound quality is your primary concern and your budget is around $400, you'd be much better off getting the $40 cheaper hifiman edition xs for $380.
Here's a review of the monolith amt: https://www.soundguys.com/monolit...iew-65005/
With an impedance of 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 90dB/mW they will require a decent amount of power to drive, especially if you apply serious eq. These headphones are also extremely heavy, weighing 630 grams. According to some forum posts I've read, these likely use monoprice's proprietary mini 4-pin xlr connectors with non-standard pin layout, so don't expect these to work with standard aftermarket cables.
Overall, unless you really want to try out air motion transformer headphones, and are willing to extensively eq with minimal guidance, these headphones aren't worth purchasing at this price.

It's hard to disagree with your assessment, but after i've done EQ to my liking, i start to enjoy them. Sure they heavy on your head and long listening session may become uncomfortable, but at this price point it's not bad for someone who willing to put effort to bring them alive and already have good amp.
