The problem with OLED screens in general (with the exception of large OLED TVs) is that they adjust brightness by pulse width modulation (PWM). Basically, when you lower brightness via PWM, what's essentially happening is that the screen is rapidly switching between full brightness and turned-off state, instead of lowering brightness itself (hence the term 'flicker'). Even though our eyes perceive the screen as darker, it's simply being turned on and off at full brightness very quickly, which can fatigue your eyes if you are sensitive to it.

I thought I was not sensitive to PWM (for more than 10 years), but now my eyes are aging and I can't bear to look at PWM screens in darkness for more than 5 minutes. So your sensitivity may change as you become older, too. I agree that reading with a black background may not be as stressful to the eyes (because most of the screen is turned off with OLED screens that way), but the letters themselves will still flicker unless you are at full brightness.

The battery life is great on mine and it's super fast. No complaints...

I've always purchased OLED tablets specifically for reading comics; the colors look amazing, but maybe that's why I've been getting headaches as of late. I read at night a lot more now, maybe the "eye comfort shield" mode is not enough.
It's definitely possible, but you won't know for sure until you have something with no PWM to compare to. I immediately notice that my eyes are more comfortable when I switch the screen from a PWM display to a no-flicker display.

I already have a m2 11 pro. Im on the market for a S9 oled maybe in the next 3 years. Android tablet UI is better than ios for media consumption... there i said it. Horizontal split screen, 3-window multitask FTW

How do you like the OnePlus Tablet? Seems like a lot for the money, including a keyboard and pencil.
I have been using base model iPad's since Gen 1...currently on Gen 9. That's my reference point. I have only had the OnePlus Pad for 5 days now so really way to early to formulate opinion, especially when I also need to transition myself from IOS to Android (I do use an Android phone). The substantial number of reviews I watched prior to purchase were heavily leaning positive....even directly comparing it to this S8. But many people will be thrown off by the unusual screen size. So far that's not a factor for me at all. My usage is pretty basic....email, web browsing, watching videos etc. So for that no problems whatsoever. Also wanted ability to multitask and this unit appears to handle better than the base iPad. The big issue for me so far is the form factor. I spend much time using a tablet at night as I am lying in bed. This tablet (without a case) is absolutely impossible to do that with. Its so darn thin, and the side buttons are placed such that my hands are always accidentally hitting them or touching the screen due to the thin bezels. And the case selection for the product is abysmal...just the most basic types. In the past I have tended to prefer the fully encompassing types such as Otterbox but those aren't an option here. But in terms of on screen performance so far so good. My goal all along was to improve over what I had (and fed up with IOS 17) and get 80+% of flagship including all necessary functionality but at half the price....actually less given the BF promo. Others here want the best of the best and are willing to pay anything for it....that's not me.

Prior to the weekend I mentioned in my original post I hadn't even been aware of the OnePlus Pad. It was only after Samsung's website issue that I noted a deal post for the OnePlus Pad that appeared too good to ignore that I started researching the product. It took me a week to pull the trigger.

You need a tablet arm. I have one mounted to my headboard and never need to hold the tablet in bed. My ipad pro is always mounted on the arm. https://a.co/d/eWPFArv

Would this be too much for a 10 year old?

Great find, Phoinix! The Galaxy Tab S8 at $449 is a decent deal for a high-performance tablet with this much storage.

I'm keeping a close eye on color e-ink tech myself. The colors are not as vibrant but those color e-ink tablets are starting to get there as far as passible color for comics.

I'll just add that I own it and while I'm very happy with the screen and performance, my battery life is way less than expected even after attempting a number of remedies. Sitting idle it loses about 10% per day, which seems excessive to me. Watching YouTube uses over 10% per hour. Not sure if my expectations are unreasonable, that's just the only thing I wish was better about this tablet.

has a garbage chipset that kills battery and an LCD screen.... SAMSUNG is just trying to get rid of overstock
You got proof to back up your nonsense post? I own this tablet, has great battery life. The processor is not the latest and greatest, but it's fast and gets the job done. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is one of the fastest and most power-efficient mobile chipsets for Android smartphones and tablets. Even Tom's Guide and CNET give the tablet good reviews.

Those must not use up a lot of battery either. I'll try to find more info about it, thanks.

I can't go back to LCD on a tablet. Until the Plus/Ultra versions of the 8/9 dip below $400, I'm sticking with my S6 lol
