I picked these up from my local Target during the Black Friday week sale. The box looked brand new and sealed with the 2 tear away adhesive strips.
First thing that was slightly off were the very hard to pull off silicone ear tips. Second thing was the missing Adaptive audio option even though the paired iPhone is on iOS 17.
The final giveaway was that they initially failed to show under Find My in devices. I wanted to test the Find My alert sound and location finding. I had to constantly reset and re-pair them to the iPhone before they finally showed up.
They eventually showed in Find My but the case wouldn't make an alert sound. It kept trying to search and connect to them. The actual earbuds occasional made a sound though.
I finally called Apple support about the Find My issues. The 2nd person I spoke to finally said even though the serial number associated with the case was legit it was ineligible for any warranty repairs, essentially saying they were blacklisted.
I'm thinking these are straight up fakes with a reused real serial number OR the case is real but the earbuds themselves have been switched for fakes. I've seen the scam of replacing those adhesive pull tabs. I know Target and other retailers match the unique serials on Apple products they sell to the customer receipt so I'm leaning towards the 2nd scenario.
I packaged these things up for return removing the S sized tips and the right earbud split apart just like the fakes I've seen online! I also noticed the pre installed M tips didn't have the size engraved on the underside.
Before buying I did my research on how to spot fakes and even I was almost fooled. This video on the Lightning ones has some good tips but the fakes have likely fixed a lot of the differences by now.

Sometimes family doesn't tell you early enough about things to get the best deal. :-/ especially when due to travel time to buy things before Christmas is limited.
if you had bought the Target Gift cards during the sale last weekend 10% off, with the Discover 5% cash back, it would make it the lowest price seen during the holiday for the USB C Gen 2 AirPod Pro

Yup definitely fakes, or stolen. Fakes look identical in person, the boxes is usually where they are different
