I got in on a deal a couple of years ago for a bag of a 1000 8in cable ties and another bag 1200 4in. Each bag was $5. I think I have enough cable ties.
I can't say I didn't consider it though
I've been using a powered stapler [homedepot.com] plus zip ties to secure outside Christmas lights to great effect. Seems to be better than just using staples as you can cut the zip tie and leave the staple for future application.

For outside permanent application I use staples plus zip ties to secure and manage wires; works well for me especially on Christmas lights.
What are you tying that requires more than 40lbs? Not trying to be a smart ass, genuinely curious.
