I jest! sort of.
You ideally want speakers and sub to work together to cover the entire frequency range with no gaps or holes. Midrange is especially important because this is the range of human speech and a lot of vocals.
So as this set is designed with the towers and smaller sub to cover all ranges. To go with the smaller bookshelfs you may need to sell the sub and get a larger more expensive sub with more range coverage .
Their are phenomenal bookshelf/Sub pairings mainly for Music. so it can be done but for Surround I would buy some Flowers or a nice Dinner and see if the towers grow on her! or point out how much easier the speech in her favorite movie is to hear! enjoy!

P.S. If anyone intends to listen to music on these, definitely use Airplay instead of Bluetooth. The difference in quality is immediately noticeable.

I've thought about getting another soundbar to replace my aging one that doesn't do well with vocals (have to turn it up, then back down for loud scenes/music) but none of the "good" ones has all the HDMI inputs that mine has (4). Soundbar = blah, I know the concensus. I have future plans for a media dedicated room, so for the living room I prefer minimal speakers showing themselves. Maybe I need to get a Blackbird for HDMI and sound test some things.
