FYI, the S24 series is supposed to be announced next month. Google Fi should have similar deals on the S24 series, like they did on the S23 at launch. I think the launch S23 deals were even better than the deal listed in this post.

The cheapest is the $20 Flexible Plan (unlimited talk/text, any Data used is $10 per GB, prorated). The taxes & fees usually add another $6-$7 a month. Percentage wise that sounds high, but some of the fees are fixed-amounts per line so they skewed the percentage. Some people in Texas have taxes & fees as high as $10 each month.

I did the Fi pre-release S23 deal in Feb this year. My S23 (with free upgrade to 256GB) was $299.99. So it was better than this deal. Plus the trade-in values at that time was great. I traded in an iPhone11 for $310 which pretty much offset the cost of the S23. My net cost was $27 in sales tax on $299.99, minus the $10 in excess credit.

Many people ported in from GV in this LOOONG thread about the Fi pre-release S23 deal back in Feb this year. Some people said those people would have their promo disqualified, but 4 months later all who ported in from GV earned their discount promo without problems.
https://slickdeals.net/f/16418272-google-fi-512gb-samsung-galaxy-s23-ultra-smartphone-pre-order-600-...

I don't want to get into that big argument again, just wanted to point out the info for whoever that wanted to know the answer.

At the beginning of the Wiki in that thread, I posted info on how to check on the status of your promo, when to cancel your Fi service and how to do it.

Can old fi users get this pre-order deal or just for a new port-in number?

I had originally read your post below, but kind of skimmed through/missed the part where you say we'd need to activate it first. Now it makes sense.

"The phone comes unlocked and can be used with any compatible providers on Day 1. HOWEVER, there's a requirement that you have to keep its Fi line active for 120 days. So, you can activate the phone with Fi then remove the Fi SIM and stash it away (do NOT use that Fi SIM in another phone) and use the phone with a physical SIM of another provider. You can also keep using the physical Fi SIM in the phone and use its eSIM with another provider."

I'd like to do this, but porting a Google Voice number sounds too risky. I'm wondering if I could just buy a cheap Tracfone instead? Also, what do you mean that "you can keep using the physical Fi SIM..." if it's being removed and stored? Are you talking about after the 120 days? I appreciate your help.

what is the cheapest monthly service?
$20 + tax ($25ish) for one line with a la carte data that you don't ever use ($1/100 Mb). If it's an additional line on an existing plan, reduce by $5/month.

I'm pretty sure the fi sim has to be in and active on the phone for the 120 days, but only like 75% sure. I feel like I see that language when I get the deals but I don't pay much attention since I'm not playing and angles.

Worst service I ever paid for. Their customer service is horrendous. My email was hacked so Google no longer could figure out who I was or how to cancel my service yet continued to charge me. I eventually just cancelled that credit card. 🖕
There is definitely risk exposure to the arbitrary nature of Google's account TOS. Your 4 yr old kid uploads a video of his butt on a tablet signed into your gmail because "butts are funny" and your life is ruined because everything you rely on is connected to your gmail account. Mitigate risk - create a new google account for the phone/each device and sing in 'real' google account(s) as needed as secondary.

Years ago - about a year into using fi w/a la carte data, I downloaded google's podcast app, subscribed to a buch of podcasts, and "downloaded" the episodes while on wifi figuring the app would I don't know, play back the local version of the files regardless of the network status. A month later, the bill was double because apparently the app just streams episode files when possible, regardless of the local file being present, and I unwittingly chewed through A LOT of data. I put on my most aggrieved Karen suit and jumped into a chat with the Fi customer service, wrote a couple of sentences about what happened with a screenshot of the app's data usage and less than a minute later I was out of chat with an apology and a credit for the app's data on my next bill. Their customer service is fine. But anything that relies on these universal accounts are going to be risky.

I saw that at release as well but unlike your great deal on the iPhone trade-in vs. S23 deal price, the S22 trade-in value was too low. I got a 256GB S22 for $370ish with a $400++ trade-in credit on an S21. I was hoping that would be a trend I could ride but I just checked and they are only offering $150 for the S22, and it's been issue-free-ish.

The Fi S23 pre-release deal was back in Feb this year and already ended. For this current S23 deal:
* If you're a new customer, or a previous Fi user but don't have an ACTIVE Fi number, you'll have to port-in a number.
* If you have an ACTIVE Fi number, and that phone is not under another promotion , then you can buy the S23 with discount and at activation your current Fi number will be transferred to the S23.

I have done many Fi deals (S22, Pixel 7, base S23, S23U) and always removed the Fi physical SIM a few days after activation to use the phone with a physical SIM of another provider. You do NOT need to keep the Fi SIM in the phone the entire 120 days. If you remove the Fi SIM, do NOT use it in another phone, because if you do you'll get a message from FI that you're about to lose your promotion discount.

If you can find info on a Fi site/page that says the Fi SIM has to stay in the Fi phone for the entire 120 days, please post it.

You can buy a phone number on Ebay, www.numberbarn.com [numberbarn.com] , or activate a new Tracfone line and port the number to FI.
To clarify my previous answer...After activating the physical Fi SIM , you have several options:
1. Keep the Fi SIM in place, and use the eSIM with another provider.
2. Remove the Fi SIM and store it away, then use the physical SIM of another provider.
3. Ask Fi support to transfer service from the physical Fi SIM to the S23's eSIM, then use the physical SIM of another provider.

Still cheaper than what you pay at Best Buy, Amazon, Samsung, etc.
