Great deal! A real rock machine but great for all genres. Lots of upgrades over a traditional Tele design because of the neck Humbucker and individual volume and tone controls for each pick up gives you some extra control over the sounds.
Being born in the 70s and seeing Waylon Jennings on TV, this is what a "guitar" looked like to me!

Nice price! Also, the 40th anniversary models really impressed me when I tried them out a bit ago, and they're 288-312 for blemished ones on guitar center's website right now.

I really wanted to like the 40th anniversary Tele, but the one I got (in vintage blonde) had a dark and muddy neck pickup along with serious tuning issues. It absolutely would NOT stay in tune. It was a shame because I thought the neck and frets were awesome, but fixes for the tuning problems and pickup were going to be unreasonable for a guitar at that price point.

How many guitars is too many? Because this is an incredible deal for one of the best price-to-value ratios I've ever seen for a Tele with a humbucker. If only the HH went this low...

The bridges on some of the Squires can be messy. I changed mine out with a nicer Fender one, and it made a world of difference.

Keith Richards, Springsteen, Clapton, Jeff Beck, Merle Haggard, Joe Walsh, Alex Lifeson, Mark Knopfler, Chrissy Hynde, Tom Petty, and one of my favorites, Mike Campbell, have all been known to play Teles, at least at times. I think you could argue that the Strat and Les Paul are the more iconic rock guitars, but yeah, Telecasters are definitely right there, too. Mine came broken from the factory - it's never sounded like Keith Richards or Joe Walsh, try as I have.

Just bought this for my wife. What amp/speaker/etc would match up with this deal? I'm clueless.

Or, is this a mistake to buy? She knows basic guitar and plays her dad's electric guitar when visiting. His is probably closer to $1k but she needs to start somewhere right?

I suspect the comment about the look isn't that it's a Telecaster but that it's a Telecaster with a humbucker, a switch near the neck, and all. those. knobs. Even today, Telecasters with a humbucker don't usually have separate volume and tone knobs with a pickup selector in a Les Paul position.
