Often times, the drive problems can be corrected issues by updating firmware - like some of the Samsung EVO SSDs.
Overall, I'd say it's safe to buy and I did buy. Be sure to search updates and make sure firmware is the latest. Another thing is try not use it for long time to keep it relatively cool - essentially do not write hundreds of GB small files at one time.
Walmart does NOT mention "Extreme or "Extremel Pro" and shows: SanDisk 2TB Portable External SSD - up to 680MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2 - SDSSDE29-2T00-AW25
The model numbers between WD.com and walmart.com are different.
So, is this Walmart drive a) reliable and b) is the Walmart one even one of the drives impacted by this issue (for which there is a firmware fix at the link above)?

While your points are logical (about them not selling the impacted models anymore), I am still on the fence:
Keep in mind there is an article on digitaltrends where a data recovery firm said the issue is actually at the hardware level and the firmware alone was not enough (new ones now include a different / better resin to ensure the components stay soldered on).
So the question (IF this model is even impacted), would be is Walmart carrying old stock or new stock?
This deal's drive is not in the impacted models list of the WD.com link I shared at least; however under one of the reviews for this specific Walmart model on WD.com, the response from WD rep mentions the issue and firmware fix (despite this model not being part of the list)... Might be a mistake in the reply.
So till not sure now...

That said, the issue with the failing drives appears to be at the hardware level, so I'm skeptical of how it can really be fixed in the firmware.
As for the Walmart model vs. the one on Amazon, I believe the Walmart one is basically the same as the New Generation SDSSDE30-2T00-G26 on Amazon but with different firmware to make it a bit slower (680MB/s instead of 800MB/s). It doesn't make sense to produce an entirely different hardware design for just one retailer.
I just received mine from Walmart today and there are references to 2023 on the packaging, so this isn't old stock.
These are just my thoughts and observations FWIW. YMMV.

Currently $99 at Samsung.com. Less if you have EDU or EPP and CB.
Note, that I bought two back on 11/26 with my Fold 5 order and they still have not shipped. Order is telling me that ETA is now Dec 19th. I am considering picking two of these Sandisk up because I need them sooner for gifts.
