These are great for adding bulk and making sure the exterior gets scratched by dirt that inevitably makes its way between the outer case and the laptop.

Going back to 2006, the only Macbook I've had that got an exterior scratch was when a meth head broke into my house and put all of my electronics into a wheelbarrow and tried to leave with it while high out of his mind.

This. And if the dirt doesn't get you the shell will for sure cause the computer to overheat and stop working

Had something similar for 10 yr old pro, not bad, the case cracked. Did add some bulk and weight to it. It did help survive few falls for sure. This time around, looking for a skin on Top to avoid scratches on the case. Any recs or stick with the hard shell? TIA

I once dropped my MBP carrying it one-handed at the workplace, carrying some stuff in my other hand. Suffered damage that slowly grew from niggles to outright problems causing me to replace it.

Then I got a matte rubberized case that gives me a good grip now.
