I originally bought this over 10 years ago. You can literally mash it to your face you will not cut yourself.
I moved on to one with a higher attack angle--which you can cut yourself, but I still use this one if I want a daily shave.
In any case once you go to safety razor you will never go back and save a ton while at it.

1. You do not have the correct shaver for your skin type/beard coarseness
2. You are using the incorrect blades for skin type
3. You are putting too much pressure/angle. You literally should be putting little to no pressure.
4. You are not putting the correct foam/brushing it in to the hair (you should do after a shower). If you shave on dry skin not heated/wet it will be harsh.
I use glycerin soap on my upstroke finish, I find that balances on the final stroke but that is personal preference.
Unfortunately for DE razors/blades its not a one size fits all. You will likely have the setup for 20+ years so I would go to your local razor shop (if you have one), or call up said manufacture (Merkur) and explain the situation or your hair/skin type and they can assist. There are many forums out there, but I find its is littered w/ purists so they are jerks most of the time, so I stay away and just contact the manufacture or go into my local shave shop.
