It is an Internet gateway with FW/IPS/NAT and a switch all in one (no WiFI). This gets you into the Ubiquiti system with its ability to manage other Ubiquiti devices centrally. It is what many would consider prosumer networking gear since you are using a separate Internet gateway, access points, POE switches, etc.

Last week, I told myself I'm never buying Ubiquiti again (my UDM-Pro just randomly decided to die overnight and tech support is useless) and yet, here I am. New UDM Pro on the way, thanks OP!
I got one during the BF sale. I used the money saved to pay for their 5 year extra care plan which included overnighting a replacement (though I've never had an issue with my unifi stuff, it gave me the warm and fuzzies)

How was the transition and is there a built in utility to handle the transfer? I've got a USG and CK Gen1 and almost pulled the trigger on BF, but my system now is stable and I don't really need the extra throughput so I am hesitant to make the change. The main benefit for me will be the updated VPN options.
Took a backup from my controller.
Plugged in UDM-Pro and updated it, devices down stream of it.
Restored backup into UDM-Pro.
Spin down controller, connect UDM-Pro into infrastructure in permanent position.
Done.

Someone give me a reason to move from an Edgerouter 4 to this. Home use, 1gig fiber, 3x Unifi AC Lites, 48-port GbE switch.
Only if you're going to add cameras.

If you care or need the security "3.5+ Gbps routing with IDS/IPS"
Does the Edgerouter do security?

Already have a UDM-base that I've been using for a few years. Want to add cameras with Protect, I'm wondering if it's better to replace with UDMP or just get the NVR now that's on sale too! Would only be a small amount of cameras (1-2 to start and expand in the future) so I'm a bit torn.

Im very tempted, but my house just isn't set up for any pro-sumer IT equipment. I'd have to get a small IT rack, otherwise it would just be sitting on a desk. Not sure if that's ideal airflow.

Also, that desk would be in my bedroom. Can anyone comment on the fan noise of one of these? I'd likely replace my Nest cameras (6) with Unifi cameras and my Google nest router/mesh with this. Not sure if that's enough to really get the fans going or not.

Yep same process. I was concerned and hesitant as well. My only recommendation is to make sure your USG network match the latest that UDM pro has. I believe its currently
Network 8.0.7

Used the steps from here

I've been wanting the NVR, but just got the UDM Pro. Wondering if I really need the extra storage. Especially since I will have to wait to buy drives.

I was looking at a 12-14TB drive for the UDM Pro,, but could go for cheaper drives for mor capacity in the NVR.

ive not heard the dream machine noise but in my general experience, fanned Ubiquiti = loud, fan less is… not

I chucked a 8tb drive in my UDMP and for 5 2k cameras is about 30 days of storage. Good start but will be adding 8 more and so the NVR will be nice to reduce the stress on the UDMP

Never said it wasn't a better buy - just that it's a better machine.
I through hard about it during BF. For me my current CK+ sits right next to a 48 port POE professional switch. So the 2.5Gbe and the 128GB SSD might be nice, but not sure it was worth the extra $120 for me. I didn't need the POE.

I'm not saying that I don't have second thoughts (esp. the 2.5Gbe), but it is what it is. I have 1.2GB internet, but even then the modem only has 1gb ports so I couldn't use it anyways (and yes I could get a 3rd party modem, but my "deal" right now requires me to use the xfinity modem, which I have dumbed down to only a modem).

Is there a big performance bump if going from a usg4pro+cloudkeyg2+ ? Assuming cost is not an issue
flex minis are trash for me so far. Currently all working but I will be replacing them with flexes as I find them cheap. Are you POE'ing them? I had one that stopped being so shitty after I used usb-c instead.
I had it on the USB-C power and plugged into the UDM-Pro initially.
I started seeing the alerts every 3 days so I moved it back to my POE switch and removed the USB-C power. Same results regardless of how its powered. Its just an annoying alert I get every 3 days in the logs and my notifications on my phones app.

USW-Flex-Mini is offline. Please ensure it's receiving sufficient power. If so, but it's still offline, replace the power cable to confirm that the original isn't damaged.

Yes, the USG Pro 4 tops out around 300Mbps throughput with IDS/IPS enabled. It's also EOL and may not receive any more firmware updates (last was in January)
