It is an Internet gateway with FW/IPS/NAT and a switch all in one (no WiFI). This gets you into the Ubiquiti system with its ability to manage other Ubiquiti devices centrally. It is what many would consider prosumer networking gear since you are using a separate Internet gateway, access points, POE switches, etc.

Can I buy and HDD and use it as storage for the G4 as well or I have to buy a NVR for it? I am planning to upgrade a normal Asus router to UDM pro + U6 pro + 3 G4. Beside POE, is there anything else is required for this set up? Thank you.

Anyone has any experience with their doorbell or security camera?
I've used amcrest, reolink, blue iris, generic onvif in the past and went unifi for the new house. It is night and day better in terms of setup and use. The setup is easy, the app is excellent, love it. I have a mix of g3 and G5 cameras with the G4 pro Poe doorbell

This HAS to mean new products are coming right? They never do sales.
OG...well now that you say it, I finally got a UDM Pro on BF, so you're probably right. The new one will likely be like 10 times better knowing my luck. LOL

I use their cameras and love them. I had their original doorbell. The first one died. Within a few hours of installing the replacement, it died. I have the replacement for the replacement sitting in a box still sealed. I keep saying I'm just going to sell it.

I replaced it with a google nest doorbell (battery) since it connects to our google homes (good WAF), however that one has a horrible retainer mechanism (clip) and it's a PITA when I have to charge it. I just had to tear it apart to fix it so it didn't just fall off the wall when you pushed the button.

The new doorbell is POE and if they had a good way to link it to Nest hubs I would probably go through the hassle of hooking it up because I think my issue with the last one could have been my wiring, not the doorbell, but I have no way to verify one way or another.

Wow, I thought they never have sales, so I ordered my doorbell a few days ago.

Do you think they would price match?

The UDM Pro is an NVR, just put a surveillance HDD in the drive slot and install protect. You'll need a POE switch to power the cameras and the access point. The 8 port POE switch they offer is all you need, but i'd recommend a 16 port for future proofing.

Go back to Microcenter for a price match
That's the plan, Stan, and for $100 you bet I'll do it. But they only price match in-store and have weasel words about "discretion" in their promise. So it's bare minimum an hour round trip out of my life and worst case a pissing match where I have to tell them I for sure will pack that thing up and return it before my window closes in a month. But it would be nicer if they'd just do it on the phone. Given how insistent they are on getting my cell number you'd think that would be a fair ask.

Thank you, repped.
If it's on a LAN, especially it's own VLAN, IPS/IDS should not be needed, correct?
I think one would need to know more details to fully answer this. The vast majority of these are deployed in homes or small businesses, where the ISP's connection is plugged in and the UDM is the first (or last, depending on your perspective) device between the LAN and the rest of the world.

The main point of the marketing bullet point can be summarized as: "our firewall is efficient enough that most people won't notice a drop in speed if it's turned on."

Unless someone has hacked it, it's unifi cameras only. And for POE, if you want full control, get a unifi poe switch.
I found a discussion where someone was successfully able to add 3rd party cameras: https://github.com/keshavdv/unifi-cam-prox and I'm assuming this would be a good enough switch for 4 8mp 4k cameras: https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/ca...s/us-8-60w

What does using a Unifi switch get you over any other (poe) switch? Besides seeing the generated map, I can't think of any other benefits as far as the cameras and protect are concerned.

I'm going to give this a shot: The dumbed-down version is that the firewall is capable of 3.5+ Gbps. If you turn off the firewall, it would be the full 10Gbe throughput (though since most home connections max out at 1 Gbps, it's not a huge deal).

IPS = Intrusion Prevention System
IDS = Intrusion Detection System
Firewall (ie rules, vlan, mgmt) are seperate from IPS/IDS. IPS/IDS are a type of traffic inspection that comes after allow/block firewall rules. If it's allowed through, then IPS/IDS will then make it's own determination based on a series of signatures and how it's "acting" to decide if it is legit traffic or something bad is detected.

Great deal, picked one up on BF for this price. Now I'd really like the Dream Router to come back into stock, and/or them to come out with one that is a bit faster... that would actually be in stock.
