Costco Wholesale[costco.com] Southwest deal is back online, valid from 12/12/23 thru 12/25/23. Costco Members: $500 Southwest Airlines eGift Card (Email Delivery) on sale for $429.99.
You can always buy a ticket and cancel it. Then the amounts are stored in your account. They never expire and if you buy anything above the cheapest fare y can transfer them to others.
Heads up that Southwest doesn't allow you to add these to a wallet or account for future use. You have to wait until you're actually booking a flight to use them, so don't forget you bought them!
Typically it will be your choice and they'll just give you a flight credit.
Example: I had a 2 stop flight (SJC -> Vegas -> O'hare -> Tampa). After landing in O'Hare a little bit late, I found out the connecting flight to Tampa was cancelled.
I noticed the Southwest app automatically scheduled me for a flight the next day. I went to the ticket counter and asked for other options. I was told there was a flight from Midway -> Tampa about 3.5 hours later on the same day. I accepted and they just printed me the ticket. They didn't charge me for this.
It was about a $47 Lyft ride to go from O'hare to Midway. I was told by another passenger they would reinburse you for the cost of the ride. So I took a screen shot of the ride receipt and submitted an online claim to get reimbursed for the fee. A couple weeks later Southwest gave me a $150 travel credit.
I imagine that if you stayed at a local hotel, they'd probably give you the same or similar reimbursement.

I had not thought of that.
If I buy a more expensive ticket for myself and cancel to get the credit on my account, can I then later buy tickets for someone else? Or will the credit only be good for myself?
I don't want to stock up on $1000+ of SWA credit and then not be able to use the credit for others in my family.

Yes. The new rules allow you to transfer funds to others. Anything other than base fare. You don't buy the ticket for them. You initiate a transfer to their RR account.
Wait, if I buy a ticket and then refund it for credit I get to keep the points toward a CP? That doesn't sound right.
Any funds spent on the SW credit card earn points. Refunding the ticket for credit doesn't affect that.
So yes, you could buy a ticket today and get CP credit towards this year.... currently 4 points per dollar i think. Whether you cancel it or not. When you use the credit you will get more points directly from SW for flying the flight (6 or more points per dollar). But those will credit towards next year's CP and A list.
Don't confuse credit card rewards points and flying rewards points. The rules and rates are different.

3% cash back with Costco, or 3 points per dollar. Theoretically the Chase points are worth about 4%
But if I wait until January, all points go towards next year's companion pass

Mostly No but it's worth a try.
