I bought the Ultra 2 as an upgrade from my Series 7 due to the fact it had sapphire glass (more durable), bigger display (my eyesight isn't what it used to be), longer battery life, and I was curious about the double tap feature. Overall, I've been pleased. The things I've enjoyed most since owning (bought open box BB when it came out for ~$620+tax) have been the flat display (feels like more usable space than the curve), the sturdiness of the buttons and ease of access to buttons (I use a Mac and use the watch to double click to unlock), the battery life, the sleep tracking (which do since I have the battery life), and the double click feature. Double click is most helpful for me when dismissing a notification or replying to a text or email. Since that's something I do frequently, it's worth something to me. I probably wouldn't pay for it myself for just that though.

If you had the 45mm Series 7, the screen size is "almost" the same (1.9" vs 1.92" or 1143 sq mm vs 1164 sq mm). 45mm vs 49mm is the measurement of the case, and Ultra has a thick bezel to fill the gap.
Slight correction from https://www.apple.com/watch/compare/

40mm (SE)
324 by 394 pixels
759 sq mm display area

41mm (Series 7+)
352 by 430 pixels
904 sq mm display area

44mm (SE)
368 by 448 pixels
977 sq mm display area

45mm (Series 7+)
396 by 484 pixels
1143 sq mm display area

49mm (Ultra)
410 by 502 pixels
1185 sq mm display area

That's a 3.675% increase in display area compared to the 45mm watches. The overall size of Ultra 2 could accommodate a lot bigger screen by getting rid of the bezel. Probably something to look for in Ultra 3 Smilie

Oh, there's no question that the Ultra 2 is a bigger watch. I just wanted to point out that the actual screen size is negligibly bigger compared to 45mm Series 7/8/9 watches, in case someone was thinking that they'll be getting a lot bigger screen. Of course, it has ton of other outdoor/sports oriented features that appeal to people who are the target audience for this watch.
I wouldn't say "negligibly". Series 789 are 45mm, Ultra 2 is 49mm that's almost 10% more, no? Now, where that screen real estate is FELT can definitely be debated. I'd say, when doing text messages, with a full size on screen keyboard is where I personally thought the difference was the most obvious.

i know these watches are a ton of more capabilities, but i just wonder if most users actually use them. I just bought a 30 dollar Tozo watch, and I've had some nicer watches in the past and this does the same as those older ones. my only regret is that its just black with a black strap. i love my one watch that looks like a proper watch, even if that means the screen is round. anyway, i strongly recommend anyone looking for a smart watch to at least look at some of the cheap ones. could save you a shit ton, but of course you can't show of your apple watch...ugh
I will take your advice and drive my Garmin Instinct for a 3rd year while saving up for a Fenix 7, both of which have actual real battery life you can boast about.

Any advantages over 45mm series 8 besides battery life and diving stuff?

It's a gimmick not worth that price difference
The double tap is not worth $500. I never use it. But the battery life and screen size/legibility is. I would buy it again.

45mm vs 49mm is not the size of the screen; it's the case size. The increase in display size from 45mm Series 7/8/9 to the Ultra is 3.675%. The reason that it "looks" bigger than it actually is due to the thicker black bezels around the actual display on the Ultra line.

Using an expensive watch to unlock your computer? This list seems a bit thin....

Is a giant watch comfortable to sleep with? I don't know that I'd want an electronic device next to me head at night.

I mean people pay 15k for a rolex, so at least you get some legit use out of it.

I got a new 45mm series 8 for $230 yesterday, should I return and get this sale? Anyone know if the double tap feature is worth it for this one
Its definitely not the selling point for the Ultra. If you want a larger screen and much bettery battery, then yes.

A watch isnt an Iphone. I run marathons and other long races. The battery life on this would be better for me. Right now Ill stick with my Watch 6 and 7. I am sure you dont know this has some potential life saving technolgy to locate people lost etc. Like people who climb mountains. Probably waiting for the next version of this watch in 2024. Unlike other cheap goods you may like these are not worthless the day after you buy it. There are meany health tools and benefits in the Apple watches. Some insurance companies will subsidize or even cover the cost of an Apple watch.
