Amazon has the 6" Xtract sander on sale. All time low per CCC. I think this is even lower than Taytools intro price.

6" Model. Definitely a speciality item, so not for everyone.
Some people complain about paddle switch.

I had this on my watchlist, but ended up with the Fest00l instead. So no first hand experience. Just a deal if this is what you're looking

I had the Festool (ETS EC 150/5) on my watchlist, but ended up getting this instead in a similar deal (actually $10 less) in October 2022. I had been on the fence between the two and was edging towards the Festool, but then at 2/3 of the price with the Amazon deal, I went for the 3M. The sander has worked great for me, but I still look at the Festool with envy.

I've been wanting one of these/ the festool, but it looks like the 3m dust extractor is almost a grand? are you just using it with a shop vac?

I use it just with a shop vac with Xtract Cubitron II Netdiscs and get just about complete dust extraction. I have an air quality monitor in my shop and it doesn't detect an increase in particles in the air.

Of the high-end/priced sanders for woodworking, this one, Festool ETS EC and Mirka DEROS are often compared. The Festool retails at $575 and the Mirka is north of $600. The Festool and Mirka both come in Systainers, which has some added value compared to the 3M offered here.

I think your question is really getting at whether any sander in this class is worth the cost to upgrade versus a regular 5" random orbital sander such as a DeWalt at $100 or less. So, a couple of advantages are 6" versus 5" and a long stoke length of 3/16" (5mm) versus 1/8" or less. Both of these attributes will make sanding much faster - this difference is considerable if sanding large flat panels (like half the time or less). Next, the vibration is so much less than for random orbital sander in the cheaper class. If you are sanding for extending periods, you will greatly appreciate how much less fatigue you get. Finally, the dust collection on these high sanders is phenomenal when hooked up to a vacuum. The cheaper ones that have vacuum attachments are generally way less efficient. This feature makes your environment safer (particularly when sanding inside) and also reduces the scratching from stray dust.

Therefore, if you spend a lot of hours sanding, and can spare the cash, then this might be worth it, as you will save time, you won't get "jelly arm", the air around you will be cleaner, and you end up with a better finish. However, if you're using a sander only occasionally and/or for small jobs, it's probably not worth the investment.

Was fully ready to jump on board with this one over a Mirka or Festool. However, after doing some checking on reviews, seems like some people have some serious durability concerns with theirs. Check 3M's own site, a few reviews saying how it broke down in short order. Just a heads up for anyone looking at one of these.

Yes, I noticed those reviews. The sander hadn't been out long when I got mine and so those challenges hadn't yet emerged. I got lucky so far, but I definitely would have had pause when buying if those reliability issues were evident then.

I got the ETS EC 150/3 for $460 reconed 2 weeks ago. I'm thinking a new ETS EC 125/x is a better deal now with 3 year warranty and can easily swap out for 6" pad. Going from 6" to 5" requires some dremeling of the pad.

Mirkas and and presumably these all blow their pcbs after awhile if that's due to dust collection or not who knows, i used to be shocked how many mirka's showed up on ebay not working.

However they do have excellent warranty handling but parts in US are non existant and especially that pcb Once that goes toss it. Tear one down lol not worth 600 bucks these days, you can get knock offs on amazon no idea how they perform though. I have 2 mirka's still but i just grab the bosch rotary capable one, it has a good orbit, and aggressive for wood. Not palm friendly like an air sander like these, though but for 400 bucks less i get over that real quick.

just to followup on the tear down, 2 shells, a dc motor , an encased pcb, that's it. dust flows around that. Presumably that's the deficiency with these ..heat over time as well as dust built up contributing to that along with encased pcb). You def want dust collection. But last i checked pcb wasn't available in the US. so i'd pass. Bosch is way to go..

Have 3 of the dual mode Bosch, all different "versions", work fantastic and have not had any issues with heavy use. The ROS65VC with 5 abd 6in pads has been the best round finishing sander used and can take heavy wear.
