Can someone explain to me how the Mario line works? I'm getting my kid into Lego, and it looks like the Mario ones look different than the other sets? Are they may be bigger pieces or some thing

Mario, Peach, Luigi, and DK are Bluetooth hunks of plastic with some regular Legos attached. Other than some flat pieces with QR codes to scan, they are regular legos. The app for it allows you to build levels and they can pretend go through the obstacles, collect coins, etc before the end level timer sound reaches (starting warp pipe and flag pole comes with the starter sets).

It is very annoying that there are no print instructions. Only on the app. For this reason, the sets don't always get fully constructed in my house, the kids lose interest Frown

That's actually a deal breaker for me, thanks. My kids favorite part is reading the instructions and putting it together. Without a booklet, it's less enjoyable.

So the whole Mario line is like that, no print instructions?

There is an app specifically for the Mario line. Each set has instructions on the app as well as videos for how to use the set. The instructions are pretty nice as you can manipulate the angle you're viewing it from. I'd say download the app and take a look at one of the set instructions and see if it's still a dealbreaker or not.

Some info FaithfulHamster left out.

There are three 'Starter' sets, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach. Those are bluetooth hunks of plastic. Cost $60, always on sale for much cheaper. Everything else is considered 'expansion', like this set. That also includes Donkey Kong, he's just built up bricks, not an electronic bluetooth hunk of plastic.

Supposedly next years releases are supposed to have printed instructions. It is really annoying as legos should be a no screen time activity.

No instructions takes away the joy of the build for my family. As for the Mario line itself, you need to buy the Mario starter kit (~$50) to use the interactive play with scanning the QR code. The "game" gets old fast. My kid plays far more with his Minecraft sets than Mario.I do regret picking up so many little Mario sets as most don't feel complete.

We've got no complaints here about the instructions. My kid loves following the instructions on the iPad, being able to scrub through the steps, the animations and videos, rotating the blocks in 3D, and scanning the codes to add the set to his digital collection.
