This laptop is configured with 1 x 4GB and 1 x 8GB SODIMMs, so both slots are currently occupied. Per HP support documentation linked below, the system can support up to 16GB RAM. Upgrading RAM beyond the 12GB already installed, where possible, would require replacing the existing 1 x 4GB SODIMM with a compatible higher capacity 8GB memory module.

At this price I'd expect the ram and SSD to be bigger. Is there something I'm missing here? It's certainly not the chip.

I'm also not impressed by the price, but I'm a cheapskate.

Touchscreen + 2-in-1 definitely adds to the price, did you miss that?

The touchscreen and 2-1 definitely makes it attractive, but the lower SSD is a trade off. Also I've owned a few of these flexes in recent years and the hinges are poorly designed and break easily.

My son has been using an Envy for HS for the past 3 years and it's been great. Only issue is the rubber footings peeling off during the first year, but otherwise the build quality has been great.

Even better. I was thinking it had 8gb soldered and 1 slot with 4gb on it.

I have never seen a HP laptops with soldered RAM. My primary desktop is HP. 4 of the laptops are HP.
Maybe the new models have soldered RAM.
