This laptop is configured with 1 x 4GB and 1 x 8GB SODIMMs, so both slots are currently occupied. Per HP support documentation linked below, the system can support up to 16GB RAM. Upgrading RAM beyond the 12GB already installed, where possible, would require replacing the existing 1 x 4GB SODIMM with a compatible higher capacity 8GB memory module.

I did not miss the 2 in 1 config but with almost $500 with taxes, far better options and return policies at Costco.

I can't speak to which brand GTinMIA was referring to, but I can attest to the hinge issues with HP 2 in 1s. They did offer to repair it ...for $200+ 🤦 ♂️

It seems all laptops are having terrible hinges at these price points.

I don't own this laptop and have never worked on it. So you'll have to draw your own conclusions. That being said, information posted by HP at its support site linked below indicates 2 SODIMM slots, with 16GB maximum RAM supported. One of the available configurations is 1 x 8GB and 1 x 4GB for a total of 12GB, which the laptop in this linked deal comes with. Hmmm....

As for voiding your written warranty, if you're in the United States, two words: Magnuson-Moss.

Note that damage done while upgrading a computer *can* be grounds for voiding a warranty.

In the United States, the real issue isn't necessarily whether or not the warranty is void, but rather what will the consumer do when a seller refuses to honor its warranty. Oftentimes, it's just not worth the time and resources needed to fight a company over a warranty claim when the item can easily be repaired or replaced, and the dollar amount relatively small. Sometimes you just have to chalk things up to a bad purchase and move on.

If you're located outside the United States, applicable laws, rights and requirements will be different, so YMMV.
