Note that damage done while upgrading a computer *can* be grounds for voiding a warranty.
In the United States, the real issue isn't necessarily whether or not the warranty is void, but rather what will the consumer do when a seller refuses to honor its warranty. Oftentimes, it's just not worth the time and resources needed to fight a company over a warranty claim when the item can easily be repaired or replaced, and the dollar amount relatively small. Sometimes you just have to chalk things up to a bad purchase and move on.
If you're located outside the United States, applicable laws, rights and requirements will be different, so YMMV.
