Man, I bought this on clearance from Walmart in 2016 for $95. How times have changed. I really need a new one but can't justify the price.

Can you do full racks of ribs in this? Never had a smoker but want to get into it. How long do you smoke?

I have had the 18" for at least 15 years and it is still like new. It is MUCH more portable than the big one. However, for ribs you CAN'T lay a large rack down flat and get the lid in correctly. You have to bend the rack or use a rib rack which I do not like. A 22" takes care of that problem, but is much less portable. I also ownan 18" Big Green Egg and a 24" Kamado Big Joe.

The same. With good technique and experience, you can get the same result from either one. Ceramic smokers like the big green egg can make temperature control a little bit easier, but the rubber smoky mountain does an awesome job, too. Take two hunks of meat, add the same treatment and rub, smoke them with the same charcoal and wood chunks, for the same time, at the same temperature, and you'll get the same results from a WSM or an egg.

Thin rolled / stamped sheet metal manufactured on an automated assembly line that can spit out 1000 an hour for less than $15 in material costs.

For what good reason is this more than $99?

(And the piss poor excuse to pay a ridiculous markup over cost to build due to "inflation" is NOT a good reason.)

Yup! use a Hunsaker Smokers Rib Hanger and the "3-2-1" Smoking the ribs for 3 hours at a low temperature, Wrapping the ribs in foil and cooking for 2 hours and Unwrapping the ribs for 1 hour. Can do multiple racks.

Why because of size? I'll concede the acorn has less room, but how many people are smoking more than 2 butts/briskets or 4 full racks of ribs regularly?

The Acorn will hold a rock steady temperature with zero intervention, I got a wifi heat controller and don't even use it because it doesn't need it where my weber on a windy day is literally all over the place.

Another vote for the Akorn here. Mine's a Jr., and after completing the well-known gasket and RTV sealant mods, it really dials in. It's by far the most efficient charcoal grill I've ever owned. I'm usually only cooking for two, and it's the perfect smoker for us.

The price is high, but there is more to it than just metal. It also has a very very nice finish on it that should last a lifetime. These BBQ's are designed to last a very long time, and if they are not abused, they will last for 30-50 years. Also, compare this BBQ to the competition. You are not going to find a better quality BBQ for less money. Additionally, these WSM's will be supported by the community forever. You will always be able to find replacement parts, and accessories to fix/upgrade/etc these BBQ's. You will not find that on your $140 grills/bbq's. Those cheap BBQ's will burn out and be in a landfill in 2-3 years.

What about without foil, i don't cook my food in aluminum

Some people do the whole thing without foil, depends on your preference. Usually you wrap to get through the inevitable stall. You can also use butcher paper. I actually prefer butcher paper for smoking in most cases, makes a better bark. Foil may keep the heat in to push through the stall faster, but I think the cook comes out better overall with butcher paper. Also, doesn't tear as easily.
