Advice on Value for Money 3D Printer Prices

My son wants a 3d printer for Christmas. I don't know anything about them. He's an adult & pretty smart but there's a huge price range on them. Can anyone help?

What is your budget. I'm very much into 3d printers and can tell you some of them aren't of good quality and some are just going to work. I've built many custom printers etc.
