All these movies are available digitally for streaming on the Criterion Channel. I pay $99 a year for a subscription through Apple, or $11 per month. It also has hundreds of other Hong Kong/Chinese films and themed collections.

Classic Hong Kong movies. Wonder why China with it being so rich now couldn't produce anything recognizable. Meanwhile a small island HK was able to produce so many classics decades ago.
Freedom of expression vs what not

Yep
And will have the 4k remastered Wong Kar Wai versions. The Apple ones are likely former masters.
Blu-ray.com forums etc will have the side by side comparisons.

There may be good newer movies from mainland China, but maybe there is a silent ban on sharing them with outsiders.

The mainland China movie I can recall is Green Bamboo Mountain maybe from 1959. It is a state government approved drama shot with 3 color strips cameras. Good looking.

Hong Kong, The Killer with Chow Yun Fat is fun.

India, The Terrorist made in 1990s is sharp looking and has a killer ending.

Iran, The White Balloon has universal appeal.

The movie to represent USA? Man in the Moon with Reese Witherspoon comes to mind first. But maybe not possible to pick only one.

That is correct.

Per Wikipedia:
In January 2003, Warner Bros., producer Brad Grey, and actor/producer Brad Pitt bought the rights to remake the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs (2002) from Media Asia for $1.75 million.
In March 2004, United Press International announced that Scorsese would be remaking Infernal Affairs and setting it in Boston, and that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt were slated to star. Pitt, tentatively scheduled to play Sullivan, later declined to play the role, saying a younger actor should play the part; he decided to produce the film instead.

LMFAO, its so convenient to use freedom vs. expression against anything. Disney has full "FREEDOM" in every perspective, and what kind of shit has it produced in these years?

There are a lot of reasons and require an understanding of history, politics, etc. But it ties back to colonialism and forcing China to make HK a door to trades with China giving more exposure to HK media. Also, a lot of Chinese who migrated around this time period were generally from the Canton region so when TVB was a big thing, it's not a surprise that HK media awareness would spread quicker in the west through Chinese immigrants. The quality of HK entertainment has fallen greatly in the last decade and mainland China films have improved greatly. But geopolitics isn't going to let most mainland China film into the west.

There's also the fact media from China always has some political message it seems.

First one was epic, 2nd one got donnie yen, the rests are trash and the one he goes to America is a total joke. With a film like that maybe the Chinese can ask for reparations too.

Once upon a Time in China 1-3 is coming to be $9.99/each rather than the bundle?

Can someone confirm Infernal Affairs is NOT dubbed?

Because the Western world is treating every movie from China as a propaganda from communists. Everyone on social media who againsts spreading hate on China, will be treated as a government controlled bot. Politicians are dragging two countries far away from each other. Mainland is producing good movies and bad movies, but unfortunately, the movie industry in the US will import no movie from China.

Bs. I was balls deep into Chinese netizen world since mid 2000s. There's no worthy pop culture there. Bad music and bad movies. Creativity is lacking there due to politic. Chinese people grew up watching HK movies, Taiwanese shows/movies, and listening to HK/Taiwan shows. If you go go way back, Korean and Japanese movies/songs as well. And don't forget the capitalist western movies. I can't for the love of god name a good single Chinese movie off the top of my head and I watch sht tons of movies from Chinese pirate streams back in the days. Even with their well funded entertainment industry at the moment, they are producing nothing but cringe and low effort Korean/western knock offs.

You are comparing a country with a company? As a country, America produces top quality movies and shows. Just like how Korea, a free country is able to come up with all these crazy creative shows/movies. Don't be a China shill like me. Get out of it.
