I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.

Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]

Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

How exactly are they requiring the port in?

I order today, no port in needed, get the phone and put in my current SIM with existing Mint service. It should work, right?

And I can toss the new SIM out or sell it with caveat that requires port in?

The fine print at checkout mentions "Must bring phone to mint."

Does that mean we have to bring it to a mint store for them to port the number over?

I am a little confused now. Is port in required ?
Yes. If you click on the link directly from Mint's site, it mentions it right on top.

"GET 50% OFF ANY 12-MONTH PLAN
When you buy a new phone from Mint
Must bring your phone number to Mint"

If you are a mint customer this is phenomenal deal but as a someone who doesn't want to use mint mobile I think it is not a great deal. Resale value not great, Trading it won't do much either.

Yeah, but it's still worthwhile for getting the phone!

Cell phone deal of the year. Thanks OP.
if Straighttalk actually shipped those $50 iPhone SE (3rd gen) without plan, it would be another good candidate

Anyone see a way to pay with Affirm at checkout? When I add to cart and go through the steps, Affirm isn't an option.

Yes, but the phone is worth more than $200. You don't have to use the service if you are just flipping it for a max trade-in value somewhere or selling it.

Already a Mint customer with five months of service left on my current 12-month plan and don't want to give up my number, but I figured with 45 days to activate, I have time to figure out the best way to make it work. Buy now, think later -- it's the Slickdeals way! 😅

Plan A is to get a GV number to port in with an eSIM, use both my current SIM and the new number until my current plan is closer to renewal, then figure out how to move it over. Plan B is to port my current number out, then port it back in within the 45 days. For a few months I'll have 2x the data whichever way I go since the 7 Pro is dual SIM and I can have both numbers for a while either way.

Any thoughts on which plan is better?
Same situation here. The second part of plan A is where I have my doubts.

Plan B is a safer bet.

you lose the sim/service. But the phone itself will continue to work, and is still subject to being locked to Mint for 1 year. In essence, it's as if you paid $189 for a pixel 7 pro that's locked to Mint for 12 month.
