I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.
Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]
Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

Mine is arriving today. Is the setup and port over process pretty straightforward?

That's pretty significant. In some cases, or all? I would have expected that this info would have been more discussed if no one can text pictures in Mint. But only an MMS issue, so that's why it's not more publicized?
I personally cannot sent picture texts at all. MMS messages are hit or miss, I just missed one this morning but can see the replies of other people in the group.

It's all over reddit, and from my understanding, it doesn't affect all users. If you google "MMS Mint reddit" you'll be keep scrolling with all the different posts people have made over the last year. Most of the posts are specific to the Pixel 7/7Pro line. I'm not sure why more people don't bring it up, but it's there. It's enough of an issue where Mint texts you APN settings to proactively address the issue once you activate a phone via their sim card.

Got mine. I have 22 days left on my US Mobile plan, do I have to activate Mint within a certain time frame? Couldn't find this info in the small print anywhere.

Have Pixel 6a and can send and receive MMS but only over data. Not wifi. That's new to me and not normal, I don't think. Mint too. Texts come through just fine. Wifi calling enabled. That's been an annoyance but obviously not to the extent this issue has.

Within 45 days of purchasing the plan. It's in one of the emails Mint sent about order confirmation IIRC

I activated mine by porting, and there a clear warning about the 1-year plan promotion requirement for transfer. There was no option to get a new number. Looks like mint is enforcing this.

just activated the line today but am porting in from Google Voice . decided to wait and did not put the sim in as this was one of their choices so as not to confuse the porting process. I know GV takes a couple of days to fully complete but i got the prompt that my phone number has transferred. Was this just a "generic prompt" or maybe it's new, that GV ported in that quick?

EDIT: wow, as soon as i finished typing this, got an email from GV that the number has ported away, less than 10 minutes. way to go GV!

I have it temporarily unlocked using NetPatch firewall. I tried NetGuard but it didn't show the Device Setup application. I blocked both Device Setup and Carrier Setup in the firewall, and also set both apps to restricted battery and disabled background data. It's working with my Red Pocket SIM for now, but it's very finicky. I had to make three attempts and if I did things out of order then it would lock itself to Mint. My steps were,
1. Factory Reset and offline setup
2. Set both apps to restricted battery and disable background data
3. Download NetPatch APK from GitHub and copy to the phone
4. Install NetPatch and block both apps from accessing data

Carrier Setup shows up twice. I blocked and restricted both copies. So three apps in total.

I am able to connect to WiFi and cellphone data (Red Pocket) after this. Long term plan is to run this as dual sim with Red Pocket until my annual plan with Red Pocket expires. I would use Mint long term but T- Mobile does not have good coverage at my work. ATT and Verizon have installed repeaters all over our campus, but T-Mobile refuses to install them.

This is the buy 6 months get 6 months if you transfer in promo. That was always going to be the case, that they'd enforce those terms. If you start with new number and don't port in, only get 6 months worth

Yes, the promo terms are clear. The confusion is from the physical SIM which was sent is not 6+6, it is 12 months. The terms on the package do not mention port in requirement, in fact they mention the option of getting a new number. So people who are waiting to activate their SIM were wondering where the port-in requirement would get enforced. Looks like that is when you activate the SIM.

Yes, I have the same question. I should've gone with the 15GB plan for an additional $30. But everything was in a rush when I tried to place the order.
