I did use it for my neuroscience research, which includes some quite heavy command line work and heavy single core computation (sometimes multi-core but a lot of the software I use is academic and not really optimized for multiple cores). It never lagged once while running heavy computations for hours. It was pretty remarkable.
The issues with Chrome are their own thing. Chrome has improved but it has quite a few performance issues (e.g., https://support.google.
BUT I always think that for another $250 more, I can get a M1 Air and I get a screen, (less ports for sure but I have so many dongles since the first usb-c macbook came out I already have those port replicators ready), same cpu power, same memory, same SSD as M1 Air.
You say Mini is cheaper? well not if you want a proper mac keyboard then and track pad so you can use it then we're talking another $200 which makes the price of Mini + Keyboard+ Trackpad BEFORE a screen very close to the current day M1 Air. That brings the price to $670 with no screen. If you get a cheap screen then price is the same as the $750 brand new M1 Air.
So if you're wondering about M1 Air vs. M2 Mac Mini, the performance won't be that drastic, and the price in the end is very similar with you add the necessary accessories to use the Mac Mini. M2 Air is $899 so it would be $150 more expensive but it's a great laptop and you can take it with you. Mac Mini not so much.
I own a lot of Macs and Windows, just something I always thought about whenever a new Mini comes out and I debate if I should get it.

Depending on the game, it will do great. I played quite a few games on my base M1 Air (8 GB RAM with 256 GB SSD) -- Civilization VI and others. People run Baldur's Gate 3 on low to medium settings well on base M1 systems. Base M2 Mac Minis can run BG3 at medium quality with FSR at 1440p and hold close to 60 FPS.
It's not perfect for gaming (mostly limitation of native Apple Silicon games) but for a <$500 box, it's quite a solid performer.
