Build quality, higher end capacitors, better warranty, higher power, more inputs/outputs, more speakers, better room correction, better processing, and things like "Imax Enhanced", etc. Room correction seems to be a big thing on the forums these days and the best room correction is saved for the high end models.

Like a lot of things it's a quick improvement from super cheap to reasonable. After that you are paying for smaller and smaller improvements for a lot more money. As an engineer (not sound engineer mind you) I have always said the first 95% of perfection comes relatively cheap. That last 5% is really expensive. Yet some people are willing to pay a lot for that last 5%.

I own one as well... certainly an SDer would know to wait for the inevitable sales to come around. I think this is the lowest it's been. (I bought at $399).
Right when COVID hit, the AVRs were a great price but I was apprehensive spending money at that time 🤔

How does the sound quality compare to Sony AN1000 which is twice the price but almost similar features?

It doesn't have preouts to add an amplifier. 95 watts is spread out to each channel. I think the x3800 is the cheapest Denon with preouts to add an amplifier (unless you go the route I did and use line to rca adapters, but then you have all these extra wires and mess behind the stereo).

Will this be an upgrade to my x1300?
Two major things this has over yours.

Ability to use Alexa/Google to, for example, tell alexa to 'play stairway to heaven on denon' (amazon music required).

This one has room correction software which makes the sound nicer.

Your other model is X not S so you'll also be losing some things. Can't remember, think it is pre-outs to optional second amp, and losing Zone 2. Not sure if OPs denon has zone 2.

For me the alexa thing is big. I can say a song to alexa and hear it through a receiver instead of an echo. That's big value to me.

Lowest I've seen this so far. I bought this for $399 in the summer. Totally worth every penny. I upgraded from a nearly 10 year old Yamaha HTR and am very happy.

In for one! Hovered over this 970 the last two times here on SD and finally pulled the trigger.
Saved a few bucks with my procrastinating, so all good. Was almost ready to buy Onkyo 6050, but my preference is Denon.
Only piece of electronics that has died on me over the years was an Onkyo Stereo Receiver. Had that in the back of my mind
I was in the same boat except I pulled the trigger on the Onkyo 6050. Has anyone messed with both? Should I return the 6050 and get the Denon AVR-S970H?

How does this compare to the s760h that Costco carries?

I got the onkyo 6050 (still in the box) for $100 less. Is this worth $100 more?

I have an avr-s930h that the right speaker is getting static build up that goes away when I lift up one side and drop it. I have a 1080p projector and 2.1 speakers and may go to 4.1 eventually. So for now I don't need 8k or atmos and all that. I'd rather not be buying a receiver at all right now.

But unless I can fix mine I'm looking at my options and I've been eyeing this model but also my Best Buy also has a Yamaha RX-V6A open box for $409 that I think I could talk them down on. Plus I have a $90 certificate I can put toward it. Then yesterday at a pawn shop I saw a AVR-X1400 for $125.

I've a had a bunch of issues with my current Denon and that x1400 is from the same year with mostly the same design I'm wary to put more money toward something that may end up being another headache. Especially being from a pawn shop. On the other hand if I can talk the price down and it works I would be happy to put off "upgrading" till I need to.

I'm concerned with this 970 that it has the same flaws that my 930 has had with speakers cutting out and now this static in the right speaker. The cutting out went away when I changed the board that the speaker terminals while also replacing the hdmi board that had totally died. Which is all why I'm eyeing that Yamaha despite everything I read favoring Denon receivers. At least it would be something different, which could be fun.

Idk should I try my luck with the x1400? Will the Audyssey XT on a 6 year old receiver actually still be better than the regular Audyssey on this 970 or the YPAO with RSC on the Yamaha? How low should I try to get the open box Yamaha to make it worth it or should I just stick with this Denon and hope it has less issues than my last one?

Yeah and as crazy as it sounds I'm thinking about canceling the order on the 970. This indecision is driving me nuts! Anybody ever canceled at Adorama?

Overall, it would be an upgrade mostly because it's newer and has more modern features. Your X series is of course meant to be more premium than the S series overall. Specifically, the room correction software on the S970H would be a step down (from MultEQ XT to basic MultEQ). If you do buy this unit, maybe check and see if you can run Audyssey one last time on the old AVR and save the results to a file that can be imported on the new AVR. Looks like the S970H will let you store two Audyssey profiles and then switch between them.

I don't have the money right now. But is this the receiver I should be looking at to replace my 20 year old Sony?

I just got a LG G2 and I'm maxing out my output too easily on today's new movies it seems. 20w per isn't cutting it I think and the Sony is shutting down output at intense action moments.

I don't have a sub at this time either and just running 5 speakers. An old house and thin walls don't make keeping noise to one room easy. So, I may not add one.

That's the boat I'm in, I've got two old Yamaha receivers on my 3.1 and 5.1 systems. So I run my input devices (nvidia shield) at 1080p. And while both TVs seem to have decent upscalers I keep wondering if I'm leaving something on the table with the nvidia AI upscaling.

Long story short I'd love to get a new receiver (or two) that can handle 4k but I haven't shopped for one in so long I don't know what's good anymore. I've always like Yamaha. Never owned a Denon but have been a fan. I also see some Pioneer Elites on here as well.

Thanks, that's a great idea. I do have my last Audyssey file saved already, so I might as well give it a try.
