what's up with the sudden marketing label of "18GB unified RAM" instead of 16GB?

It's based on the architecture

the M3 Pro has 3 memory channels, 25% fewer than the M2 Pro who had 4
As we combine 3 memory channels with 1.5x size memory chips, we get 3 x 6GB = 18GB of memory.

okay so this new 18GB architecture is specific to the M3 and did not apply to the older M2s and M1s, right?

Do you know why they moved away from 4x4GB in the M1 and M2? I welcome the more memory but was frustrated to see the lesser bandwidth. This is assuming the memory even needs 200GB/s

I do not, could be for a lot of reasons. maybe the memory supply chain or to make it more different from the m3 max. really cannot tell

Ya I assumed also to differentiate their product lines more. Either that or the new smaller M3 die was hard to produce and they had to bin chips more. Either way you dont get back to 4 channel until you choose the M3 max top version

I've seen this model bounce between this price to $1849 since release. Apple ed. price is $1849. Outside of some open boxes that have hit the high 1600s, especially for the silver colors, I can't see this getting much lower until the refurbs hit. Not a bad price, if it fits your needs.

Is it basically the best priced mid-range macbook?

Well, in the Apple lineup probably--but it depends on what you need. If just portability for general office work and content consumption, pretty much any Apple macbook would do, and save you a few bucks. Grab a M2 air on sale and you'll be good for that workflow.

If you do graphics, photo/video editing, etc. the higher GPU cores will help at this price point. But you could also be just fine an M1 Pro refurb, which would be significantly cheaper. If doing music creation/production, most Apple silicon is fine, although the improved single core performance on the M3 series will benefit projects with multiple effects on single tracks and needs for low latency.

Yes, the deal you linked is better. I bought the deal at bestbuy but didn't have their membership so actually paid 1799. I would have switched to bhphoto if it was available when I did the purchase a week ago and saved 50 bucks, your linked deal should be front page instead of this one.

I was looking at m1 pro refurbs with 16gb for ~$1350, and ended up with this. The extra $400 for an M3 and extra 2gb memory is probably not worth it but I did it because these are almost 3 years "newer", are actually new instead of refurb, should hold their value a little longer, and the new neat space black color. (Which honestly doesn't look very different from space grey IMO, probably not worth it). It's kind of a toss up between the two, but I went with this. I don't regret it, but there is not a huge bang for the buck for the extra $400 if you really just want the best deal.
