Technically you only need to cool the controller, which is in contact with the heat pipe. the NAND (both top and bottom) actually likes to stay warm to have better performance. Typically, double sided SSD only has NAND chips on the back, and not cooling the back NAND is actually good for them.

You do realize the SSD goes in-between the heatsink and bottom plate, right?
i dont have a Gen5 x4 , so I can't say for certain but this seems like wayy overkill.

i got this its a poor design, as u can see in pic the bottom plate has no conductivity to the heatsink.

it also doesnt cover 1/4 of the last memory bank on the ssd.

You got that backwards. Their business people were pre-occupied with if they can profit with it and didn't consider if they should.

gee i dunno, i actually bought and use the item... look at the bottom plate, its held on with screws, theres very little contact besides that, it also tends to bow out when screws are tightened leading to an even bigger air gap and less contact.

I bought one because I think it looks cool. The small one that came with my motherboard works fine though.

I have two of these. The biggest issue is most NVMe connectors are either very close to or underneath PCIe connectors on the motherboard. If you have any video card that is 2 slots or greater (i.e. all of them), it won't fit.

How necessary are these vs the standard heat sinks that come with motherboards?

I have a WB Black gen 3 that runs hot. Slapped one of these on it to get rid of that bottleneck i was getting then transcoding video. way overkill, but at least i didn't have to guess at it working.

Agree with the comment above… if you're even thinking about this… might as well get the pro version for $0.59 more.

agree with everyone that says these are overkill… but what the heck… going to grab the Pro version just to try it out
