I wear a 7 5/8 hat, and the XL is just a trifle snug. It stretched out slightly over time. The brim is not terribly rigid, just like the product picture. In hot weather it doesn't breath as well as the mesh hats (but it protects my balding spot better), but it is fairly water resistant. I don't know how well it machine washes, I've only hand washed/febreezed it as any shrinkage would guarantee it would no longer fit.
