Because H&R Block and Intuit work very hard to make sure the government isn't allowed to do so.

Yup! One word: lobbying.

Gotta love our corrupt system, causing people to spend millions of extra dollars and God knows how many man-hours filing tax returns that really have no reason to exist in this day and age.

Exactly. Intuit, HR Block and other tax service companies donate to politicians from all parties to keep the tax filing complicated so they can extort money from us annually. Thank your member of Congress and Senators.

this link will show $36 federal only+$10 gift card.

Update: Spoke to someone on the phone at Amazon who immediately canceled the order. So never mind.

I'm an idiot. I ordered the Federal only for 36.99 with $10 GC after seeing another post. Amazon chat can't cancel the order for some reason. Would anyone want TurboTax federal for only $27? I'll eat the Amazon gift card because it's like currency to me.

I noticed the disc version, they charge sales tax, however, for the download version, there's no sales tax added.
That's funny, because I am being charged over 3 dollars in sales tax for the download version. Maybe it's a States thing, I'm in NYMad

Does they cover things like stocks and other income like bank/CD interest etc
Yes. I have stocks, bonds, treasuries, side income me, etc... and works well.

Not sure why people keep over paying when there are a lot of free or very cheap options

Stupid question... but if I've been using "online" for years and it keeps track of my stuff, this version would be not what I want, right? I wanna stay online?

So are all these deals $10 more because of inflation? Or is it likely we'll see last year's prices if we wait a little more?
It's really difficult to claim inflation impacts software by that amount. Higher pricing is more likely greed.

You get one state software free to file your state return. You have to pay a filing fee, which I've always hated, if you want to file electronically. You can print and file your state return via the mail as an option and not pay the electronic filing fee. If I remember right, it was about $20-$25 to file the state electronically.
Depends on the State. In NY, e-file of the State return is free. (And actually required if you use software to prepare your taxes).

Won't thank this grift off my back.

"Intuit has spent more than $41 million on lobbying since 1998 with nearly $3.3 million in 2021 and about $3.4 million in 2020, OpenSecrets' analysis of lobbying data shows.
The tax prep company has enlisted dozens of "revolving door" lobbyists who previously held government positions, including multiple former members of Congress. They include former Reps. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), Charles Boustany (R-La.) and Albert Wynn (D-Md.), as well as former Sen. Tim Hutchinson (R-Ark.).
The top 2020 beneficiary of individual contributions from Intuit affiliates, which includes donors who have listed Intuit or TurboTax as their employer and their families, was President Joe Biden with more than $146,000 in contributions.
The tax prep company's corporate PAC, the Intuit Inc. 21st Century Leadership Fund, has given to political groups and candidates on both sides of the aisle. The Intuit corporate PAC's biggest contributions of 2021 include $15,000 each to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The corporate PAC gave another $37,500 to federal candidates in 2021 with $25,000 going to Democrats and $12,500 going to Republicans.
Intuit has given millions more in state-level political contributions with top recipients including the California Republican Party and the California Democratic Party.
H&R Block, which is not named in the FTC's complaint, has also faced accusations of allegedly undermining the Internal Revenue Service's Free File program.
The city of Los Angeles sued H&R Block and Intuit in 2019 on behalf of California taxpayers for allegedly directing taxpayers to their paid products and away from the free alternatives available under the program.
"H&R Block has for years defrauded the lowest earning 70 percent of American taxpayers — who are entitled under a private industry agreement with the IRS to file their taxes online for free using commercial products — by actively undermining public access to the IRS's 'Free File' program, while simultaneously employing deceptive and misleading advertising and design schemes intended to induce taxpayers into unnecessarily purchasing expensive H&R Block products," the city attorney's complaint against H&R Block alleged.
Like Intuit, H&R Block is also a big lobbying spender.
H&R Block has spent about $38 million on federal lobbying since 1998 with over $3.4 million in spending last year and $3.5 million in 2020. BlockPAC, H&R Block's corporate PAC, has also given political groups and politicians across the political spectrum hundreds of thousands of dollars each election cycle
. "

Amazon took $10 off the price of TT Premier on my invoice, and is still showing a $10 physical gift card shipping. If that follows through, TT Premier will end up being $45 plus tax.

FYI, Intuit now requires you to create an online Intuit account in order to activate the Physical CD version (this is new this year). It's super lame and makes it more difficult to use on other PCs..
F Intuit!

When I go to checkout, the Premier disc bundle is still showing $64.99.

I ordered the H&B version for $75.99 (download version with $10 GC). At check-out, it shows $75.99 plus sales tax, totaling $81.43 but after I paid, the invoice only shows $65.99 plus sales tax, in addition to a physical $10 GC (to be delivered overnight separately).

I wonder if this is a glitch or if they subtract the $10 GC right off the bat. Will see if the physical GC comes tomorrow.

That's what I saw, too, when I ordered mine (mine is a H&B version, btw). But after I paid, it shows an additional $10 discount (in addition to the $10 GC).
