So? I'm hiking a few feet from the subaru to the camp spot, or the backyard for when kids want to use it. The day i decide to hike into a remote mountain lake and do it more then once, is when i will consider the ultralight 2oz 4 season tent people like you use while scoffing at a backyard tent of 10lbs.

OMG, 9lbs for a 3 person tent? That's worse than Coleman tents. A got a huge 4 person Coleman that's about 8.5 lbs for car camping but wouldn't dream of using it for back packing. Got a 3.75lb 2 person on Amazon for $80 I take on overnight hikes. keep that in mind if buying as a gift for a backpacker. Not a viable backpacking tent.
9 pounds for a 3 person tent is ok if you don't mind that it's a little heavy and splitting up the load between you. My much bigger concern honestly is the laughable "wind rating" of 25 mph. The last nylon tent I car camped in the mountains with got destroyed in a thunderstorm, with winds at least 60 mph. You really shouldn't plan on taking something flimsy like this into somewhere in the back country because it could be the last poor decision you make.
That said, for car camping etc. it would be fine. For anyone who hasn't bought tents before, be aware that the practical capacity of tents is less than the rating. This "3-person" tent will probably hold 2 adults reasonably comfortably, but don't expect much more than that.
According to this YouTube video, this MH100 "Fresh & Black" is not the same tent (besides just the black interior). It appears to be higher quality with thicker fabric throughout, plus more ventilation areas versus the basic MH100 you linked - even though they have the same MH100 model number prefix.
And $35 seems to be by far the lowest price this particular model tent sells for online since it's a Walmart clearance item. As far as I can tell, everyone else has it for retail or close to retail of ~$100 for the 3-person model.
For those reasons, I took a shot and copped one. Thanks OP. Great deal.
Really looking forward to the all-black interior. 👍
I understand this is 3 season. But I have a snow camp trip with my son coming up and was wondering if this could withstand cold / snow on the ground. Type of camp. Not necessarily being snowed on. My currently 3 season is great for summer and spring but lousy once ot gets kinda cold.

Not everybody backpacks, so heavy tents are fine for most. The blackout feature is tempting, but I just bought 3 more tents. I picked one up from Amazon for a couple day backpacking trip. Which one did you get? Can you post a link?

You could learn a little good manners practice. I didn't say anything bad about tent, just pointed a few weak spots. Still, Walmart was selling recently 4 person with aluminum poles Research Outdoors tents for $40.
