I have the first gen 12.9 pro, 2015. Still works perfectly, supported with all updates, original battery still good for 2 hours per use. These are monsters. I wouldn't worry about pre M1.

That said, I would spend the extra money for the M1. Just not that much more.

It's for September. iOS 18 is rumored to have many features that need a m series. The new Siri with AI likely needs a m1. And that will likely be the big feature next year. It's rumored the pros will have new capabilities only for the m series like production software
