Great deal, thanks. Time to replace the 14 and 16TB's and complete the 6x 18TB collection.

My first time putting together a NAS. Been eyeing deals for a month now and finally settled on this and figured I'd post!

Real question, is buying refurbished hard drives sketchy? What are the chances that they are actually broken or corrupt?

Using it on unraid/Plex server

Not so much. The biggest risk I'd say would be the reduced lifespan, but otherwise the increased risk over buying new is marginal at best

Wow, I'd never have to get a drive in my life. But even for me I think 18TB is too much, especially as a refurb'd HDD (can't put sensitive stuff and most games on it)

I'd never put a single copy of stuff on any big drives - whether they're new, used, or refurbished. You should always have some form of redundancy.

My current setup is a stripe of: 2x 14TB mirrored, 2x 16TB mirrored, 2x 18TB mirrored. This way, any one drive in each mirror can fail and my data is not lost.

And with this deal I'm planning on switching to 6x 18TB in raidz2. So that any two drives can fail and I'd still be ok.

I've bought refurbished from ServerPartDeals and GoHardDrive before, and most of the drives worked great. I did have one issue with a 14TB drive from ServerPartDeals that they immediately replaced - haven't had to RMA a GoHardDrive drive yet.

I got one of my four 20TB versions of these from a similar Newegg / Server Parts Store deal ($159 after promo code a couple of days ago).

Once I get the other three, I'll report back on how they look via SMART diagnostics.

EDIT: Sorry, I thought this was via the ServerPartsDeal store on Newegg.

Be aware that I'm pretty sure the SMART diagnostics get reset before the drive are resold. An extended test is the better way to go with return drives like these.

Haven't ordered from newegg for a while, since when did they start pestering with all of the offer add ons?

Me either. And this time I got an error when using Paypal payment.
"OOPS... Promo code MERRYZIPMAS is not eligible for the selected payment method and cannot be redeemed."
Stay away Newegg...

You have to do it on the desktop version of the website. The mobile version will give you that error.
